As a Canadian, I grew up quietly proud that someone from our side of the world could dream so boldly. In design school, I would watch videos of him sketching. The effortless way he’d crumple a piece of paper and somehow see a building inside it. It made me feel like creativity didn’t need to be perfect or polished to be powerful.

He was one of the first architects who made me believe that intuition is a legitimate design tool. That structure can be poetic. That form can be rebellious. And that the things you’re told are “too much” might actually be your genius.

He gave me, and so many others, permission to think differently.

Thank you for widening the horizon for all of us. 🇨🇦🤍

London. Tate Modern. Joan Mitchell.

Her use of color, the sense of landscape, the tension between chaos and control — all masterfully orchestrated.
Mitchell spoke of ‘Little Joan’ and ‘Big Joan’ — two selves that coexisted.

It made me think about design: which self are we creating for? The one that wants to play, or the one that seeks order? Can a space make room for both?
