"For my wallpaper designs, I find inspiration everywhere I look. If my eyes are open, I am inspired, especially by nature. Nature creates some of the most beautiful shapes through a combination of math and art. For example, the Fibonacci sequence repeats everywhere, from seashells to the shape of our galaxy."

What inspires Arthur Athas, Owner of Twigs Fabrics & Wallpapers?

“My passion for collecting and preserving antique textiles and wallpaper documents continues to this day. Inspiration is always around from my plein air painting in the South of France, Pays de la Loire as well as hours spent playing my beloved piano.”

How did Arthur get his start in the industry?

“Arriving in New York upon graduating from Boston University, I began working with renowned Designer Sarah Hunter Kelly, which initiated my love for 18th and 19th century French textiles, wallpaper and furniture

Twigs Fabrics & Wallpaper’s initial production was a collection of original designs printed in our newly constructed Boston factory. Following our initial success, we expanded our design services to include the first collection for Rose Cummings Chintzes and several designers requesting custom products

Purchasing the Nancy V. MacClelland Company’s historic wallpaper enabled greater expansion. Established in 1927, these patterns continue in our product range.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art contracted Twigs to reproduce Joseph Dufours “The Monuments of Paris” for the new Richmond Room of the American Wing, currently on permanent display.

A new production facility was built in San Francisco, once again fueling expansion. Several White House administrations have showcased our work. We have been honored with numerous awards for our installations in historic houses

For over 50 years, has provided designers with reproductions of 18th and 19th-century wallpapers and fabric alongside the archive of the Nancy McClelland Co founded in 1924, and the 17th and 18th-century I D S - Imprime du Soleil, Impronta del Sole, a collection of Venetian papers and fabrics.

Stay Tuned for More. And in the meantime, here is the making of a charming pattern by Adelphi Paper Hangings ‘Geranium Trellis’, English, circa 1835-1850

Chinese trellis designs seem to be the inspiration for this British pattern. Although there was not a complete repeat of this pattern, which was discovered on the lining of a trunk, there was sufficient information for a successful reconstruction.

With its rambling vines, strict trellis structure and subtly shifting hexagonal lozenge shapes, this block printed pattern illustrates a fine and airy balance.

The theme of the Day is Pattern Play

𝟳𝟮𝟱 | 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 turns a pleated round ottoman into a faceted ruby. The jeweled center for a seating arrangement, a radiant perch for a casual seat.

A contrast cord from traces that seam, and the body is finished in 's "Amar Tonal" in Cinnabar .

The pattern in 's "Borgia" reads like a cross-section of agate — veined, mineral, no two repeats landing quite the same way. On the 215 | Byerly, that print wraps a rolled arm and skirted base finished with cord trim from Samuel & Sons, set into every seam with the same precision as a stone in its mounting.

Upholstery this deliberate turns a chair into something closer to a jewel than a piece of furniture.

The Grayson's architecture form is deliberately minimal — sleek arched arms, a single bench seat, no skirt to interrupt the lines — which is why it can carry a fabric this bold.

1150 | Grayson — "Tiger Tooth,"

2330 | Jimmy sofa, made in a pair, upholstered in 's "Samos" in Sedum — a hand block-printed botanical stripe that reads more heirloom textile than showroom fabric.

Rolled arms, a tailored skirt, bench seat cushion, and a single back bolster keep the silhouette classic while the print does all the talking.

Beyond the Roll 🧡 Atelier of Timeless Wallpaper & Fabric

The Waterhouse Wallhangings collection includes many authentic digitally printed reproductions of original wallpapers first used in the United States, circa 1700-1895. During these years, sea captains returning from trading in France, England, and Asia brought back handmade papers.

True artists designed these papers, excelling in creating and painting wall hangings. Many of their designs were inspired by the valuable brocades and tapestries which adorned the homes of wealthy nobles and merchants. Over the years, they have expanded the Waterhouse Wallhangings collection with more contemporary patterns, as well as stripes, strié, and various textures, in addition to their archival designs. As a result, the collection includes patterns that complement any decor.
