I’ve been saying this for a while! There is a joke in my family about my grandmother’s “good good china” dishes that, as the story goes, she got at the grocery store for buying $100.00 worth of groceries in 1953. Other versions of the story indicate she got the dishes at a gas station with a rewards program for being a loyal customer or that she’d made many failed attempts to pawn them off on any potential takers before they landed in my hands. At any rate, I love mixing and matching them with new and old for an eclectic tabletop...

Among grandmillennials and other creative thinkers, a mix-and-match aesthetic is giving heirloom-quality porcelain—a bargain secondhand—buzzy new appeal.

More today as we work on schemes for a Connecticut residence. This scheme has a folksy, bohemian nod with a little mod infusion seen in strong geometric patterns of tile and wood that offset the delicate colors and intricate patterning of fabrics and wall materials. Next, we will look at a more tailored palette using classic, timeless patterns and colors—maybe with a little surprise of flair here or there!

There are always those houses, aren’t there, the ones that become the designated party places, where friends and even enemies fraternize. Are the owners just more fun, or is there a design secret behind this merriment and debauchery?

Saturday sketches. The local lake communities here in Connecticut are seeing significant growth from the quarantine migrations. This lakeside bungalow has a sunken lounge and a lower level bunk room in the works. We are working to maximize the lake views to the rear of the dwelling utilizing landscape patio doors and as much window real estate as we can gather. A flip of the center stair and crafty use of vertical slats to open the stairwell up visually, also creating more transparency, have helped to create a more modern flow. Later, we will look to reface the dated fireplace and introduce built-in storage and seating solutions for the lounge to marry the architecture of the space with our interior elements.

Incorporating black into your spaces can be intimidating. It is such a commitment of color—or lack thereof...or complete “presence of all color”... However you consider it, decorating a space with black can be daunting. This month’s pinning has been a commitment to spaces with a commitment to black.

I love black. Its moody and dramatic. It is powerful but, in many ways, can have a sense of calm. For hotels, complete black-out is critical for guest rooms as a means to provide the best night’s sleep to guests no matter what time of day they rest. Black can also act as a strong foundation for introducing other bold color into a space without it feeling too adolescent, too busy or too forced. Black is classic and will never date—think little black dress.

As designers, the joke is that we have so many wardrobe options to choose from each day: black, black or black. It goes without saying that, as a designer, I love black! Let’s look at some interesting ways that black is used in spaces so it feels less daunting. Be bold! Introduce a little (or a lot) into your space...

Hot tip: try glossy black on doors and frames or use black as the foundational color onto which you layer in other color or fun patterns—using its grounding effects to balance out the bold.

For this reception area, it’s all about wellness. We wanted to create a space that felt refined and welcoming but also gave you a sense of wellness. If you feel good ABOUT a space, you’ll feel good IN the space. Mostly architectural in its core scope, we designed a desk that was both beautiful and functional, keeping health in mind while using beautifully designed screens for cleanliness. Materials selected are all cleanable and durable but have an elegant appeal, blending classic marble with warm textured metals. Consideration to materiality of columns and wall surfaces pushed us beyond your standard go-tos like paint or wall paper. Instead, veneer stones and dimensional tiles are the solution to introduce a subtle layer of texture and tone. Finally, the need to create a cohesive composition around the front desk was achieved by introducing storage cabinets behind the desk to anchor it and balanced by the delicate pendants offset over the transaction counter. Excited to to see it come to life in this new space in the happening Hudson Yards neighborhood of Manhattan. Swipe to see a broader peek at the design and how we communicate concept in an understandable way to our clients.
