Feeding a crowd of 24 at the Labor Day cookout? The math nobody memorizes: 1¼ burgers and 1¼ dogs per adult — most people eat two things total, and the extra covers not knowing who takes what. Half that per kid. And 2 POUNDS of ice a person, because it's still 95° out. Full cookout math at dinnercaddy.com

Why Dinner Caddy exists

My mom has hosted more get-togethers than I can count — birthdays, holidays, Sunday dinners, sometimes thirty of us around one table. She makes it look easy, and that's the part people miss: the planning starts weeks out, and the host is usually the last one to sit down.

So I built her something. Dinner Caddy is a free web app: answer a few questions about your party and it builds the whole menu scaled to your headcount, a shopping list with real store quantities, and a prep schedule that works backward from when people arrive. Hosting a potluck? One link — everyone claims a dish with just their name. No app to download, no accounts.

The best advice in it didn't come from me. It came from my mom and my fiancée's mom, who've hosted more dinners between them than I ever will. Their number one rule is built right in: you don't have to make all of it. Buy the rolls. Order the platter. Save your energy for the one dish people actually talk about.

It's free at dinnercaddy.com. I hope it gives you back your own party. — Adam
