Our products capture the unique effects of hand-blown glass as it interacts with light. We design and craft custom pendant lamps, chandeliers, table lamps, floor lamps, wall sconces, and vessels in our New York City stu

dio. Our work offers an alternative to mass-produced goods through its one-of-a-kind, engaging character. Greenwich Village, New York City-based designer, Jeffrey Goodman, combines an urban aesthetic with the wonder and amusement of his childhood, growing up in Wildwood, New Jersey, a beach and boardwalk town. Goodman breathes life into his work as he blows glass that subtly captures youthful lightheartedness. He is inspired by the natural texture, contrast, and imperfection of the beach’s rippling sand and the ocean’s waves -- and how sunlight reflects from each. He captures these effects in his work’s seductively tactile and refractive surfaces. Glass is a traditional, fragile, and serious medium, but Goodman imbues it with a sense of fun and good humor. He plays with seriousness through his form and appreciation of irregularity, and creates humor by setting a pattern and breaking the expectation. His organic, biomorphic forms are a soothing, natural result of the hand-blown process. These influences yield a unique aesthetic, contemporary but timelessly natural and fun. Having grown up at the seashore surrounded by an abundant, fragile ecosystem, Goodman is concerned about the environment. We offer products made with partially recycled, recyclable, and environmentally sustainable materials. These materials include the glass itself, aluminum hardware made without harmful finishes, and hardwood alternatives such as bamboo. Glass blowing is an ancient art form that involves a timeless dance with history, science, art and craft. We start with a 2000 degree furnace where we gather honey-like liquid glass on a pipe and keep it constantly turning. After an initial bubble is blown, a liquid -- Hershey Kiss-like -- piece of colored glass is dropped and smoothed evenly over the clear glass. The glass is then repeatedly gathered, blown, sculpted by hand, and calibrated to designed proportions. Gravity is also used to shape the objects as they are spun, swung, elongated, or made squat. As the glass cools to about 1000 degrees, the liquid “magically” gels into solid glass. Over a few days, the glass is brought to room temperature. Then it is sawed, ground, polished, and drilled for wiring. jGoodDesign also makes wood and metal bases, stems, and hardware by hand. Since these sculptural forms are handcrafted, every piece is unique. Goodman has also studied engineering, science, business, and the unconscious mind’s relation to creativity and self-discovery. For 15 years, he consulted in software and business strategy and taught at New York University and other colleges. Goodman’s product draws from a business approach of understanding unique client needs, and an engineering and science approach of seeing what is in common and shared. To Goodman, light is life, so jGoodDesign products transcend function. They are sculptural art that is unique, fluid, alive, and custom handcrafted to suit the client’s environment.

We were delighted to donate a new custom sconce to Tyler Wisler's vignette at this year's Design on a Dime benefit. The proceeds from the donation go to Housing Works, which provides housing and other services for New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. We are happy to help such a great cause.
