From Romance to Carving: The Evolution of Mokuchoroman into TVR®OPT Woody Carved

Born from a deep reverence for nature and traditional Japanese craftsmanship, Mokuchoroman (木調浪漫) introduced the world to a poetic way of seeing—eyewear that looked like wood, but wasn’t. Today, that same spirit lives on through TVR®OPT Woody Carved, a modern reinterpretation that fuses hand-brushed wood grain artistry with iconic vintage design.

The TVR®OPT Lookbook showcases the stunning TVR®OPT Woody Carved (Mokuchoroman) collection, photographed in New York City on January 14, 2025.

In this exclusive conversation, founder Eizo Onami reflects on the journey from Wood Tone Romance to Woody Carved—and the quiet soul that connects them both.

What is Mokuchoroman?
Mokuchoroman means Wood Tone Romance. But it’s more than just a name—it’s a design philosophy. Mokuchoroman (木調浪漫) is the Japanese name we gave the brand when we founded it in 1999. “木調” (Moku-chō) means “wood tone” or “wood grain,” and “浪漫” (Roman) means “romance” or “romantic.” Together, they express our vision: to capture the emotional warmth and natural beauty of wood without cutting down a single tree.
We wanted people to feel the essence of timber—not through raw material, but through craftsmanship and storytelling. That’s why we developed a hand-brushed and dyed acetate technique that recreates the texture of wood grain. It’s not imitation—it’s transformation.

What inspired this idea of wood without wood?
It began on a mountain trail. I looked up at the trees and thought, If a brand could stand tall for a hundred years like these trees… But wood is difficult—it warps and can’t be easily adjusted. So we asked ourselves: How can we honour the spirit of wood while creating something wearable and durable? That question became Mokuchoroman.

If Daniel Wu ever writes an autobiography, it would surely be a bestseller. This became clear during an hour-long conversation with the American-born actor, producer, and director, in which he reflects on his illustrious career that began when he moved to Hong Kong in 1997. A natural storyteller, Wu recounts his rise as an action star during Hong Kong cinema’s golden age and his successful transition to English-speaking roles in Hollywood, including his latest performance in Jonathan Eusebio’s action-romantic comedy, Love Hurts. He shares sharp, insightful observations on the global film industry’s evolution over the past three decades and discusses pressing topics such as Asian representation and the streaming business model, drawing on his extensive experience and encyclopedic film knowledge.

Wu also turns that scrutiny inward, reflecting on his recent entrepreneurial ventures, including the brand innovation lab Zuhaus and the lifestyle brand Student Driver, which celebrates car and racing culture. “Being in the entertainment world for too long is not healthy for you. I don’t want to be launching a production company or writing scripts when I’m not shooting films. I need different creative outlets,” he explains.
