Fireflies have disappeared from most American yards in the last 20 years.
The reason is almost always the same β€” and it's completely reversible.

Firefly larvae live in the soil for 1–2 years before they emerge as adults.
They hunt snails and slugs underground during that time.
Pesticides β€” including lawn treatments β€” kill the larvae before they ever emerge.

What actually brings fireflies back:

Stop all pesticide and lawn treatment applications. This is the single most important step.

Leave the leaf litter. Firefly larvae overwinter in the leaf layer under trees and shrubs. Raking it removes their habitat entirely.

Let native grasses and ground cover grow in at least one area. Larvae need moist, vegetated soil.

Add a log or brush pile in a shaded corner. Adults shelter in these during the day.

Put a shallow dish of water at ground level. Adult fireflies need moisture.

Turn off outdoor lights from 9 PM to midnight during summer. Artificial light drowns out their flash signals β€” they can't find mates and the population collapses.

Fireflies take 1–2 seasons to return after conditions improve.
But they will return.

We’ve all had that one single, lonely vine that just keeps growing longer and balder. Letting it grow won't make the top of your plant look any fuller!

If you want that lush, overflowing jungle look, you have to chop it.

By cutting the vine into individual nodes, you can turn one sad strand into 5 or 6 brand new plants. Once they grow roots in water, plant them right back into the top of the mother pot to fill in those bald spots.

Ladybugs can consume dozens of aphids each day, making them valuable allies in natural pest management.

A healthy garden ecosystem relies on a diverse community of beneficial organisms that naturally suppress pest populations. Ladybugs and lacewing larvae prey on aphids, mealybugs, and whiteflies, while predatory mites help control damaging spider mite outbreaks. Tiny parasitic wasps lay eggs inside or on pests such as caterpillars, leaf miners, and whiteflies, reducing their numbers without harming plants. Ground beetles and beneficial nematodes target soil-dwelling pests, demonstrating that effective pest control often happens both above and below the soil surface.

A common observation is that gardeners identify all insects as harmful and respond with broad-spectrum pesticides at the first sign of damage. These treatments can unintentionally eliminate beneficial species that provide long-term, natural pest suppression and contribute to ecological balance.

Support beneficial allies by planting small-flowered species such as dill, yarrow, alyssum, and Queen Anne's lace, which provide nectar and pollen for adult beneficial insects. Inspect plants regularly to identify pests accurately before taking action, and tolerate minor levels of damage when possible, as low pest populations help sustain predator communities. Avoid applying insecticides during bloom periods and focus on building a diverse garden habitat that encourages nature's own pest management system.

You walk past these trees every day.
Here's how to name every one of them.

Red Maple β†’ the classic 5-lobed leaf with a red petiole stem. In fall, turns the most vivid scarlet of any North American tree.

White Oak β†’ deeply rounded lobes, no sharp points. The acorns ripen in a single season β€” wildlife depends on white oak mast crops.

Sugar Maple β†’ 5 lobes with deep sinuses, the iconic Canadian flag leaf. Sap runs in late winter when days are warm and nights still freeze.

Black Walnut β†’ a long compound leaf with 15–23 paired leaflets. Crush a leaflet β€” unmistakably sharp and spicy. The roots release juglone, toxic to many garden plants.

Tulip Poplar β†’ no other leaf looks like it. Four-lobed, flat top, shaped like a tulip bloom. The tallest native hardwood in eastern North America.

Sweetgum β†’ five-pointed star, almost perfectly symmetrical. The spiky round seed balls on the ground are the other giveaway.

Sassafras β†’ the only North American tree with three different leaf shapes on the same individual. Scratch the bark β€” root beer smell. Unmistakable.

Ginkgo β†’ a living fossil. Fan-shaped, no midrib, no other tree like it on earth. Survived the dinosaurs. Still here.
