💜 Keep your supplies visible and handy with rolling carts.

I want to use my desk as a space to create, not to store stuff. In a small NY apartment, that’s not always easy to pull off.

Using rolling carts that I trick out with organizing accessories has been a great solution to have my office supplies and most often-used notebooks, journals, and books at the ready.

I purchased some white plastic cups that have clips so I can hang them off the side of the cart. The cups hold markers, pens, pencils.

For the lower two tiers of the cart, I purchased various sizes and shapes of plastic rainbow organizers.

The upper tier of the cart has a plastic file/literature which holds the notebooks and books that I use daily or weekly.

Living in a small space, I like being able to roll the cart out to create a kind of L-shaped workspace, and then push it back against the wall when I’m done using it.

💜 Send cards/greetings for holidays that are not of your own religion/tradition/culture.

We live in a big world, and there are so many celebrations throughout the year that serve as opportunities to learn about religions and cultures that are not of our own.

I’m always touched when my non-Jewish friends send Hanukkah cards to me during a time of year that can feel very Christian-oriented.

For me, I love learning about and celebrating the Lunar New Year. Although the Lunar New Year celebration has come to a close, it’s still the Year of the Dragon! So I decided to send my niece and nephews Hong Bau -red envelopes filled w $ which are given to friends and family during the Lunar New Year. I dug around eBay and found some Lunar New Year stamps that neighbor Kam Mak created in 2012.

This beautiful and ancient celebration inspires me, and I wanted to share my love of Lunar New Year w the younger members of my family.

💜 Make Your Mark With Delightful Postage Stamps

Great-looking postage stamps are are key to a well-dressed letter! Stamps are also a wonderful portal into learning about the wide array of topics which stamps depict.

For example, every year, a stamp is created for the USPS which represents the current animal in the Chinese Zodiac for the Lunar New Year. Great opportunity to learn about a beautiful, ancient celebration!

The two places I shop for stamps online are

- The U.S.P.S:
https://store.usps.com/store/results/stamps/_/N-9y93lv

- eBay:
https://www.ebay.com/b/US-Postage-Stamps/47149/bn_2311566

EBay often carries stamps that are no longer available through the online USPS store.

Below are some stamps in my collection. Some are in rotation for use; others like The Muppetts and The Peanuts I keep as mementos.

💜 The Perpetual Calendar aka Birthday Book

It’s fun to send and receive birthday greetings on Facebook, but there’s something so special about receiving a card in the mail. A card lets people know that you thought about their big day in advance.

A great way to keep track of birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions is by keeping an analogue perpetual calendar, also called a special occasion datebook or birthday book.

One of the first things I purchased after moving to NYC for grad school was a Peanuts spiral-bound perpetual calendar. With about 25 years on it, it’s more than a little work out. Nonetheless, it remains a prized possession.

In addition to reminding me of upcoming birthdays, it also serves as a kind of diary of people I’ve met over the years, some of whom I lost touch with and some of whom passed away.

At the end of each month, I look ahead to the next month in my Peanuts calendar and make a list of people with birthdays/anniversaries coming up to whom I’d like to send a card. I generally write and mail the cards out at the same time.

💜 Inspiration Boards

Personalized visual inspiration is so important to have near your desk/workspace to remind you of the people, places, and words that keep a light in your eyes.

Bulletin boards are one option, the drawback being that thumbtacks poke holes in things!

A better option which I recently started using are magnetic boards. I like mine framed! I use high-strength round white magnets as well as magnets with built-in clips.

I use the larger magnetic board for seasonal/holiday-themed stuff. In December, I put up holiday cards and photos sent by my friends and family, as well as some stray tree ornaments.

When Feb. rolled around, I created a Valentines Day-themed board, filled with ❤️Day cards from past and present, along with heart doilies. (See photo!)

I use a smaller magnetic board on my desk as a general inspiration board; it generally contains uplifting/inspiring photos, quotations, cards from friends.

This Feb., however, I switched it out to a Lunar New Year theme and included a small collection of Hong Bau, the red envelopes filled with money that are traditionally given to children on this holiday. I used a battery-operated string of holiday lights to frame the board. (See photo!
