Happy Women’s History Month! Vintage copper Glow Lamp by Ruth Gerth, 1931, now in the shop.

Part of the Cooper Hewitt/Smithsonian Design Museum’s permanent collection, the Glow Lamp was designed by American industrial designer, Ruth Gerth.

Gerth (1897-1952) was one bass-ass female industrial designer in a predominantly male field back in her day. She designed the Glow Lamp for the Chase Brass & Copper Company who was known for their plumbing and industrial fittings but wanted to branch out to the designer market hiring designers like Gerth, Russell Wright and Walter von Nessen to design beautiful lighting and home accessories. This lamp, despite it’s clean, modern lines is inspired by a copper toilet float! Read more about her amazing story on our site.

This week: The JUMO 600 chrome desk lamp, late 1940’s. A favorite of iconic French designer, Charlotte Perriand. She enjoyed this light so much, she selected it to be part of the 1949 exhibition “le Bazar” at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris which was put on by the UAM (the Union of Modern Artists), a group she was part of. The exhibit showcased beautiful and useful objects of the time including works by Calder, Leger and Le Corbusier.
