An asymmetrical balance of verticals and horizontals, large artwork and small photographs combine with a few select pieces on display to tie this whole wall together. Note the interesting contrast between the rectilinear wall and the sensual curves of the Danish Modern chairs.

One of New York's most desirable apartment buildings doesn't have a Park Avenue address, but is new construction on the West Side. Architect Robert Stern brought all the grace and detail of a pre-war building to a new building with all the modern conveniences and amenities of a 21st century building including extra large, but traditionally detailed window to let the view in. This concept of building a new and improved pre-war has proven immensely popular. I am surprised it took this long to happen

Bookshelves: housing your history.

I abhor clutter, but editing one's life down to minimalist standards isn't for everyone. We accumulate a lot of things as we pass through life, Where does this all go? Storage locker? Maybe.

I use simple bookshelves as a framework for corralling clutter and holding our history be it books, photos, collections and other sentimental objects. The grid of shelves brings order to the potential chaos.

Instead of scattering these objects around, I pull them together for display and storage. My shelves are laden with books, awards, photos. collections and various objects. A "skyline" of sentimental pieces and treasured collectibles sits atop the bookshelves. Light fixtures wash the shelves providing a warm glow and highlighting the objects.

Know what you're getting! I have a crush on this sofa from CB2 called Avec. inspired by French mid-century furniture it has a classically modern feel to it. It retails for about $1,200 and would look great in your home. Now the downside, it sits on a platform of "sinuous springs" which is retail speak for zig-zag springs, as opposed to tied coil springs. The zig-zag springs can lose their shape quickly in a heavily used piece. This piece has great lines but may not hold up under heavy use and you'll be sofa shopping again in no time

A missed opportunity: the outdoor elevators of Hoboken or why designers must travel. The elevators that connect Hoboken to Jersey City's Heights would have sweeping views of New York's spectacular skyline if they weren't enclosed in an uninspired brick shaft. A hundred years earlier Lisbon constructed an outdoor elevator that is a huge tourist draw and was designed with some artistry. What a failure of imagination in New Jersey

"Get rid of this boring white!" is what a cool, young couple with an extensive art collection wanted for their2 bedroom plus study, 2 1/2 bath condominium.

The furniture and dark cabinets coupled with the diffuse light of a northern exposure prompted me to select a warm, golden camel color called Etruscan as the principal color for the main halls, Living/Dining Room and open Kitchen.

The color concept is one of moving from dark and rich to light and serene. A total of ten colors was chosen for the apartment.

This room was designed for a discriminating bachelor who was still living with pieces from his college days. He wanted a place that he would be proud to show off, that would reflect his values and, perhaps, help in courting his future wife. We worked very collaboritively and my client took a very hands-on approach. Coming from my own love of Asian design, I directed him towards a store specializing in Asian antiques. He wanted a great deal of storage, so cabinets and dressers were to be a high priority. Noise transmission to the apartment below was a big concern so wall-to-wall carpeting on a pad was selected. Over this my clinet placed a fine Oriental rug to add color and depth and to further guarantee a minimum of noise transmission. Piecess range from a spectacular solid walnut George Nakashima dresser, Korean antiques, artisan crafted accent pieces and a chair that had been in his family for decades.

A Friend/client whose redone living room I just collaborated on. We finished pulling it all together. He repainted. We had the sofa recovered in easy-to-clean Microsuede, I found throw pillows, he hung the walls with a lot of art pieces salon style, and finished it off with a well priced 8 x 11 rug from Home Depot, which was the most challenging part. Home Depot offers very few pieces in this price range that are thick enough to curtail sound transmission. I think it looks quite fabulous especially when one factors in his budget. Worked with Thad Hayes to renovate this duplex at Harrison and Abromowitz's luxurious mid-century U.N. Plaza. Thad opened up the space and used long, steel reinforced teak desks and consoles to organize the space. Thad opened the Breakfast Room into a study off the Living/Dining Room. It was my idea to blast all the way through to the servan'ts room and create a long sweep of windows and an enfilade of spaces.
