🕎 The Key Elements of The Jewish Interior Style 🔯

Every interior consists of ingredients that make it balanced and harmonious. Functional elements are the base, and others work as spices. They create unique author spaces that reflect their owners` character and preferences.

In most Oriental interior styles, there is one more main Style-base element that exists - Symbolism.
Symbolism in Oriental interior design refers to the deliberate use of colors, patterns, materials, and decorative elements that represent cultural, spiritual, or philosophical meanings. Symbols are another form of pattern to which our minds and bodies quickly respond.

Key Elements of Symbolism in “Jewish Interior Design”:

1. Motifs:
*Elements of the Nature: flowers, leaves, landscapes,
*Animals - lions, rabbits, birds, mysterious animals, reptiles.
*Ritual items,
*The pomegranate - symbolizes fruitfulness and knowledge, represents righteousness, and the 613 commandments (mitzvot) of the Torah. It is a motif of fertility and abundance.
*Tree of Life - represents spiritual growth and connection to the divine,
*Circular and Spiral Motifs: the eternal nature of God and the cyclical nature of Jewish holidays & life cycles. Represents harmony and divine order.
*The Eye: represents God’s omniscience and ever-watchful presence, it expresses divine supervision and guidance. The concept of the “evil eye” refers to negative energy or harm caused by envy or ill will.

2. Sacred Geometry and Patterns:
*Geometric patterns in mosaics, tiles, and textiles reflect God’s infinite nature and the interconnectedness of creation.
*David star / Magen David - Represents unity, balance, and the connection between God and humanity; Combines male and female, Heaven and Earth.
*Hexagons - associated with the Star of David and the six directions of space (north, south, east, west, up, and down); represent completeness and the order of creation.
*Interlocking Triangles and Squares, triangular, rhombus - represent stability and the connection of past, present, and future. Squares signify balance and earthly order.

The project of the Master bedroom in a Transitional Style

Location: Staten Island, NY
Type: Two-level house

The goal is to design a light relaxing ambiance for sleep and an inspiring atmosphere for getting ready for the new day. The Master bedroom has a naturally lighted bathroom by an attic window and a closet room.

The bedroom has four symmetrical doors and a window. This means that there are not many variants to accommodate furniture. We put it in the centerline of the focal wall, in front of the fireplace. The leftover space is used for the make-up area.

Also, there is an angle-roof ceiling with an attic window. The previous house owner wanted to highlight the difference in ceiling height with a lot of wallpaper. It made the room too noisy. We made the highest wall the focal point with the beige relaxing mural and the fireplace. All the rest walls are background, which supports this landscape view.

Also previously the wall with the balcony door and a window was covered with textile. It made the space less light and airless. We highlighted only the balcony door and opened the window.

🍷 The project of the Living room with Dining area in Transitional Style

Location: Staten Island, NY
Type: Two-level house

The goal is to create a light, solemn space for family and guests to gather. The room has a neutral, warm white background with classical moldings. We added colored furniture and bright textiles. The decor and textiles can be changed quickly, and the ambiance will differ.

Previously, the room was used for guest holiday dining purposes only. The dining table with chairs stood in the middle, and the room corners were occupied with small decor. The space was used ineffectively - most of the time, it stood empty and unused. We designed the living area for socializing and watching TV. Also, we utilized the corner between two isles for the dining zone. It became more convenient to serve guests from the kitchen and to communicate with them in a soft area zone.

Two passages and two windows are real issues of the room. We have to keep the aisles clear and we have restrictions on using furniture at the walls with windows.

Also, we have open aisles, which make the kitchen and hallway visible. All open areas have to match all the other areas and balance them.
