There’s a piece of both of them in every painting I make.

My grandmother on my father’s side painted in watercolor. She was one of my favorite people in the world. My grandfather on my mother’s side painted in oils. I never had the chance to meet him, but I grew up with his paintings hanging in our home.

Somehow, I became the one in the family who carries both of their love for creating. I like to think of it as a gift they each left me, in very different ways.

Most people assume the CJB I sign my paintings with stands for Claudia Janine Biester. And it does.

But it also stands for Claudia Jan Burga — carrying a little piece of each side of my family with me.

Every time I put those initials on a painting, I’m reminded that while the brushstrokes are mine, I’m painting in footsteps that were here long before me.

I tried to stop at one handmade watercolor palette. I really did. 😂🐚

But I couldn’t help myself. I had to make another!

This ocean-inspired clay palette features real shells in different shapes and sizes for holding paint, water, and mixing colors.

I love that the shells make every palette completely unique—and this one might be my favorite yet.

Now the real question: should the next one stay ocean-inspired or go in a completely different direction?

Just look at what everyone created today! 🌸🎨

We spent the afternoon at Nook of Knots, Etc. turning pinecones into textured flowers—and I absolutely loved seeing how differently each artist brought her bouquet to life.

That is always one of my favorite parts of teaching workshops: everyone starts with the same basic idea, but every finished piece reflects the person who made it.

I am OBSESSED with how this watercolor palette turned out! 🐚🎨

The large shell holds my water (or brushes), and the smaller shells are different sizes for holding paint and mixing colors. It’s functional, completely unique, and honestly even better than I pictured it in my head.

Now I want to make more. 😂
