🐾 Sadie’s Crate Build • Part 6 — The Hardwood Top

We’re down to the final piece of Sadie’s crate!

The tabletop is officially glued up and in clamps. For the top, I’m using Anigre, a beautiful-looking African hardwood.

A big thank you to Goliath Hardwoods LLC for helping me out with the material for this one! Great people to work with, and I’m excited to see this top come together.

After a day or two to let everything fully set up, it’ll be time for final sanding and getting the top ready to install.

We’re getting very close to calling this one finished. Stay tuned! 🐾

🐾 Sadie’s Crate Build • Part 5 — Bars & Hardware

Another big step forward on Sadie’s crate!

The steel bars have been painted and installed, the door latches are on, and Sadie stopped by to check out the progress herself.

There’s officially only one major piece left — the hardwood top! Once that’s finished and installed, this build is complete.

Almost there! 🐾

🐾 Sadie’s Crate Build • Part 4 — Finishing & Assembly

We’re definitely overdue for an update on Sadie’s crate, and quite a bit has changed since Part 3!

The frame and door have both been painted, the door is installed, and the floor and shiplap back panel have been cut, painted, and installed. The magnetic door catches are also in, and the material for the hardwood top is officially in the shop.

At this point, the list is getting pretty short. The steel bars still need to be painted and installed, the door latch needs to go on, and the hardwood top needs to be milled, assembled, finished, and installed.

After spending so long looking at a bare wooden frame, it’s exciting to finally see the furniture-style crate I envisioned from the beginning taking shape.

We’re officially in crunch mode now as Sadie is quickly outgrowing her current wire crate, so it’s time to get this one across the finish line!

Stay tuned… 🐾

I wanted to showcase a couple of custom pieces I made in the shop not too long ago.

Both of these signs were built, painted, distressed by hand, and finished to create a rustic, timeless look. One stayed local, while the other made its way all the way to Texas!

The challenge of a new project is always exciting, and I appreciate everyone who trusts me with their ideas.

I wrapped up the last two porch welcome signs of the season recently, and they’ve officially made their way to their new homes!

I just want to say thank you to everyone who placed an order and supported Grit Built Woodworks over the past several months. Every order, like, comment, and share has helped this little business continue to grow, and I truly appreciate it.

With these finished, porch welcome signs are officially wrapped up for the season. Now it’s time to get back to some of the other builds that have been waiting for their turn in the shop. I’m looking forward to sharing their progress over the coming months. Stay tuned!

🐾 After a very long break, it’s finally time to get started on Sadie’s crate again!

As you can see, Sadie seems pretty happy that Dad is finally getting back to work on her new crate. 😄

All of the finish sanding is complete, the steel bars have been cut to length, and we’re officially moving into the finishing stage.

Next up is primer and paint, hardware, the hardwood top, and a few other big items on the list.

There’s still plenty of work left to do, but it’s finally starting to look like the furniture-style crate I had envisioned from the beginning.

Follow along to see the progress—and the finished result!

Wow… there’s a lot going on in the shop right now!

Sadie’s crate has been the focus for the last couple of weeks, and it’s coming along nicely. As you can see in the first picture, I just finished up the door. Next up is surface prep for paint.

Today I’m taking a short break from the crate to start what has easily become one of this year’s most popular projects. Over the next couple of weeks I will turn a pile of lumber into two more beautiful porch welcome signs. (Second picture.)

After that comes a special build that I’m not quite ready to reveal yet, but here’s a teaser… (Third picture.) 🇺🇸

And lastly, my wife found a cabinet and asked if I could turn it into something cool. Furniture refinishing isn’t usually my thing… but challenge accepted! (Fourth picture.)

It’s going to be a fun few weeks in the shop, and I can’t wait to share these projects as they come together.

Which project are you most excited to see?

🐾 Sadie’s Crate Build • Part 3 — Frame Assembly

Last update we got all of the lumber flattened, surfaced, and milled.

This week all of those individual pieces finally came together to create the frame. It’s exciting to finally see it starting to look like a dog crate.

Next comes the steel bars, the door, and the endless sanding before paint. Every night it’s another small step, but every small step gets us a little closer to the finished piece.

Stay tuned… 🐾

Good morning! 🇺🇸

Today is a special day. Two hundred and fifty years ago, ordinary people stood up to fight for something bigger than themselves. And it must have been fated that they would win the day.

May today act as a reminder that petty differences cannot consume us, and that our common interests will always unite us. And as the sun sets on this day, may we remind the world we will not go quietly into the night—we’ll celebrate beneath skies lit by the colors of freedom.

Today, we celebrate our Independence Day! 👽

Happy 4th of July, everyone! 🇺🇸
