Hello! How is everyone? Have you all been keeping busy? Is it cold enough for you? Are you hoping for more snow? Or have you had it with winter? I think old man winter woke up on December 21st and decided he wanted to see how much winter we could handle. Silly man, right? We’re New Englanders! Well, I stuck out my chin in defiance and said, ā€œBring it!ā€. šŸ˜‚

But, itchy, dry, reptilian skin? No, thank you!!!
Am I right? Or am I right? So what is a girl to do but replenish her whipped tallow supply. And then I figured, maybe others would appreciate me making more than enough and sharing the love. I bartered bottles of hot sauce for some beautiful grass fed suet from Arkhive Farm and Ranch Services LLC and went to work. I made a whipped tallow body and face cream and decided to make lip balm since I was already at it. If you know me, you know I’ve always loved making my own personal care products. I really love how they came out and yes, I use them every day. For the tallow cream I added avocado and jojoba oils for their emollient and noncomedogenic properties. The addition of castor oil provides deep hydration while preventing dryness because of its high fatty acid content. It’s perfect as a moisturizer and various home remedies so I use castor oil quite a bit in our home. I chose a blend of essential oils that were both healing and pleasant, without overwhelming the senses too much. My first foray into tallow cream left me smelling like a cheeseburger, hubby said all I needed was some ketchup and mustard. Hahahaha. I can truthfully say that there is no cheeseburger scent in this new batch. I also want to add that a little goes a long way, but I’m a fiend and apply it everywhere so I go through a lot, fast. As for the lip balm, I added a little beeswax for structure and a long lasting balm. Avocado oil for extra protection and finished it with peppermint and vanilla essential oils. I’m selling the 2oz jar of tallow cream for $20 and the lip balm for $5. Please reach out if you’re interested. Thanks again for all the love and support.

Stay warm and safe out there! I’m going snowboarding and yes, I’ve got a tube of lip balm in my pocket!

Oh, I included some photos of house plants because they make me happy and my shelf of mortar & pestles because they also make me happy. šŸ¤

You guys! Thank you so much for nearly wiping out my little hot sauce inventory! That’s 48 bottles of Ash Swamp House hot sauces floating around the NH seacoast, Maine, Vermont, and Tennessee. Woweeee! To know that veggies from my garden will now be shaken, poured, and sprinkled on plates of eggs, home fries, tacos, burgers, and so much more is the coolest feeling. I am so grateful for every single one of you who continues to support me and my busy little hands. šŸ™šŸ½šŸ’š

Hello and season’s greetings! Is it cold enough for all you winter loving snow bunnies? Are you staying warm and safe? Or are you more of a suns out, buns out summer loving rabbit? Well, guess what? I know a good cure for the winter blues. Homemade fermented hot sauces! They won’t warm your toes but they might put a little blush on your cheeks and sweat on your brows, depending on your tolerance level. They also make great stocking stuffers! Although the veggie garden was not so abundant, the peppers came through and despite life being quite busy, I managed to harvest enough peppers to make three batches of hot sauce. Two are Ash Swamp House staples and the third is the seasonal special. It’s made with orange habaneros, deep purple carrots, onions, and garlic. The color came out so beautiful! I named it Rabbit Hole Habanero because I was born in the year of the rabbit and I do love my rabbit holes. I think it rolls off the tongue nicely, too, and if you know me, you know I love ALL the words rolling off ALL the tongues. Most of the Rabbit Holes have already been claimed because I have a handful of customers who have been hitting up my inbox for hot sauces and well, they got first dibs, but fret not, I still have plenty left. If you’d like to purchase a bottle ($15 each) please send me a message and we can work out the details. The photos are a collage of recent and past pepper harvests, this year’s carrot harvest (peep the Deep Purples), and the peppers on their first day in the fermenting jars. That’s all for now, I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season! ✨

Happy Labor Day weekend! I hope you’re all enjoying these cooler temps, I know I am. If you’re looking for a sweet jar of flowers to bring to your BBQ or just because, then lookie over here. The garden is cranking out flowers, if not vegetables. I do apologize for not having any vegetables this year but I’m so happy to see other little vegetable farm stands popping up all over town. Kudos to all those growing and sharing their garden abundance with the community. I love it so much. šŸ™šŸ½ā˜ŗļø

I think I like to grow flowers that require more work, time, and space than I have capacity for but my gosh, it’s totally worth it. I’m worth it. Wait, isn’t that a slogan for a make-up brand? lol. But I am worth it. And so is every gardener who decides to grow dahlias.

Whether it’s just one variety, one clump of tubers, or five varieties with 10 tubers each, they’re all so worth it. One multiplies into many after each season and falling in love with them is beautiful and tragic, because after you grow them for one season, the desire to grow every color, variety, and size available is inevitable, yet you know that’s a bit unrealistic if not impossible, but dreaming about the possibilities is what floral romance is all about…..I LOVE love stories, don’t you? I also love that this one is giving off major autumn vibes.

What are you in love with these days?

There’s nothing quite like flipping through a seed catalog in the dead of winter, dog earring all of the pages with your favorite flowers and vegetables, dreaming about the dog days of summer when the garden comes alive and you get to pick the very flowers that you drooled, I mean ooh’d and ahh’d over, and sink your teeth into the best tasting tomato you’ve ever had, all while hunkered next to the wood stove, as the wind howls and the snow falls.

My tomato game was not so great this year and have remained as dreams on the pages of those catalogs but the China Asters, they jumped right out and into my hands! Perfect as can be. A beautiful bouquet on a gorgeous summer day, just for me. The best part? Getting graced by a hummingbird checking out the bouquet in my hand, so close to my face, I could feel the air from its wings. No photo, cause you know, they fast little things.

I came back from vacation and there was still one free bouquet left. You guys! I guess that means you’d rather pay for them. lol. I picked these yesterday and there are only four. I’ll let you have them for $10/bouquet, which is a steal because just look at them, and well, lisianthus. Besides, it’s less than a drink at the bar these days and think of it as me, helping your liver out. See, we all win.

Good morning and Happy August! I know, it’s been a long while and I haven’t shared much here. I said I would share photos of the backyard raised bed gardens and well, here are a few. In no particular order, here are what days have looked like in my garden since I last posted. Not gonna lie, the flooded vegetable bed has allowed me to slow down and focus on projects much neglected and enjoy summer. The last couple of photos are items I am putting out at the farmstand for you this morning. The small bouquets of flowers include lisianthus, a flower I started from seed back in February. That’s the flower you see in the second photo. Lisianthus is very difficult to keep alive in its first few months and I’m really proud they did so for me. The best part of these bouquets today, they’re my gift to you, free of charge. So please come and take one, they’re so cute! The chive vinegar bottles come in two sizes this summer. $10/$20 for the small/large respectively. Have a lovely day, friends, it’s already so gorgeous out there.

Hello June. Hello chives. Hey chive vinegar. Keep scrolling for three days worth of color progression.

In garden news, I’ve made the decision, actually Mother Nature made the decision, to not grow vegetables in the large vegetable plot this summer. We have had record rainfall for the month of May and the water table out in the field is just 5 inches below the surface at the moment. Higher in some parts. We went out there yesterday and dug two 16’ trenches, using the soil to create two 16’ berms, hoping to grow tomatoes in them. I have too many tomato starts not to try. The only crop out there at the moment is garlic and they are doing OK. Then we covered the space with cardboard until the cardboard ran out because the weeds got out of control while we were being shut out of the plot. We were sinking and getting stuck in the muddy mess. It looks like absolute s**t out there and we can’t do a thing about it right now. Plus, there’s more rain in the forecast. When the ground freezes this winter, we will get yards and yards of loam delivered to raise the soil level and hopefully provide better drainage on top and avoid the same disaster next year, if the weather decides to repeat itself.

All this to say that I am sad but a little relieved because it is so much work for one little person, on top of working, trying to keep a clean home, and have some time for relaxation and family.

This means only one thing. The raised bed garden in the back of the house is getting all the attention and it’s looking fabulous. Can’t wait to share some pictures with you. If there are extra vegetables and flowers, I will share those at the farm stand, along with homemade products, like, chive vinegar.

Thank you for following along and supporting my passion for all things gardening and homemade goodness! I appreciate all the support you all have shown me more than I can ever express. šŸ’š

In the garden, everything happens fast or slow depending on your patience and anticipation level. Sometimes, everything happens in just the right amount of time. For the first time in many moons, I finally feel like I’m right on time. Gone are days of hanging by the thread of an unraveling ten year old sweatshirt kind of season, echoing with claims of ā€œbut I just didn’t live in winter fully, I’m not even ready for spring, how on earth are we in the middle of summer?ā€. I tied, no, I knotted that thread and added a drop of Loctite for good measure. In four days time the daffodils popped, strawberries peeked through the straw, and perennials like motherwort, chives, tansy, stinging nettle, alliums, astilbe, peonies, catnip, and more are loving the season right now. The chives often get invaded by weeds, so I made a cardboard collar and added lots of new composted manure, here, there, everywhere, with the help of an 18 and 20 year old. I found a patch of mullein volunteers so that will be a ā€œdo not mowā€ zone. The greenhouse keeps getting filled with seedlings from the house and……..hubby extended the footprint of my garden. We are right on time.
