I’ve been running around so much lately that I completely forgot to announce our September Candle of the Month!

And honestly… this one was worth the wait.

Toasted Coconut • Macadamia • Warm Honey • Vanilla Bean • Santal

Kōlea is warm, creamy, soft and incredibly cozy, with toasted coconut and macadamia bringing beautiful richness, softened by warm honey and vanilla bean and finished with a smooth touch of Santal.

COPPER IS BACK.

And honestly… Fall hasn’t even really started yet.

This scent has already sold out twice, making Copper our #1 best-selling Fall scent so far this year.

So what is everyone loving about it?

Copper is warm, creamy, rich, and completely unexpected. It starts with ripe banana and coconut, melts into white pumpkin and condensed milk, and settles into smooth santal for a scent that is cozy without being overly sweet and decadent without feeling heavy.

I hadn’t been ready to write this, but needed to. On this Aloha Friday, we remember our friend, T.!

I think a woman who spent so much of her life telling the stories of others deserves to have her story shared over and over again, from every angle and every perspective.

We opened our storefront on September 24, 2022. About a week later, I received a call from Teresa, introducing herself and asking if she could write a piece about us.

She came out, and almost instantly, we felt drawn to her. Like us, she was a Bay Area transplant who had found herself loving Oakdale for its community and its heart. It felt like we had bonded over something much bigger than an article.

I told her how our business started. I talked about my Mom and her battle with cancer. At the time of the interview, my Mom was on hospice, and it was an incredibly difficult time for our family. Teresa was so gentle, kind and supportive.

It wasn’t until later that I would truly understand what a wonderful woman she was. She was helping us through one of the toughest times in our lives while quietly going through battles of her own.

My mother passed away in October, and Teresa reached out. She did that often. She didn’t have to. She wasn’t required to. She simply cared.

She always had a way of putting things into a different place and perspective than you had seen before. She had a way of helping you see what really mattered underneath all of the “noise.”

People like that are rare.

Teresa had a way with words. Not just in the way she wrote, but in the way she thought. She used her faith, her honesty and her realness to make you look at things differently. Somehow, after talking with her, the things that felt so heavy didn’t always seem quite as heavy anymore.

Even when she was sick, she made her way to us, making sure we were alright, just as she had from the beginning. A woman fighting her own battles and still making sure everyone else was okay.

Not long before she passed, Teresa came into the shop with her Mom. Tito was there, and afterward he told me he had a feeling that maybe she was saying goodbye.

There was something about hearing that that stayed with me. Maybe because I knew, somewhere deep down, what he meant.

I wasn’t ready.

I’m not ready.

It’s something I’ve had to say far too often in my life, and I just can’t say it again.

So I won’t.

I will say a hui hou, until we meet again.

I know this world, and I know my world, will always be a little better because she was in it and a little sadder because she has left it.

I will find comfort in our memories. In the talks, the laughs, the tears and the wisdom she so generously gave us during her time here.

And I find comfort in knowing that she can finally meet the woman I was so fond of, the woman I loved so deeply, and the woman I created ‘Ike Loa for.

We will always love you, T.

Thank you for always being you. Thank you for seeing us, for checking on us, for making us laugh, for making us think, and for all of the conversations that meant more than you probably ever knew.

Your story deserves to be told, too.

Over and over again.
From every angle.
From every perspective.

And I will always be grateful that ours crossed paths.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH.

The other day, Tito joked that we should have an Employee of the Month.

So here it is.

I didn’t bother with open nominations, because let’s be honest… Tito is going to vote for Tito every single time. 😂

But the truth is, there was never really any question about who this should be.

Tito is our Employee of the Month. Every month.

When ‘Ike Loa started, it was my dream. But what I don’t think I say enough is how much of himself Tito has poured into that dream since the very beginning. He didn’t just support it. He became part of it.

He learned it. He believed in it. He works for it. He worries about it. He celebrates it. And somewhere along the way, ‘Ike Loa became just as much a passion of his as it is mine.

He’s the finance man. The runner. The problem solver. The one making sure things get done. He’s the face of ‘Ike Loa, the guy customers see, and the guy behind the scenes making things happen. I can hand him a million moving pieces and somehow know they’ll get figured out.

He never says no.

Well… technically, he does. Usually very quietly and under his breath, just loud enough for me to hear. And then, somehow, he does it anyway.

Because that’s Tito. He shows up. Over and over and over again.

He has worked through the stressful days, the exhausting days, the crazy days and the days when things don’t go according to plan. He has given his time, energy, ideas, patience and so much of his heart to this little company.

People see the candles, the collections, the events and everything that happens inside these four walls. What they don’t always see is the work behind it all and a whole lot of that work has Tito’s fingerprints all over it.

What started as my dream has become our passion, and I think that deserves to be celebrated.

So here’s to the guy who keeps the wheels turning, the numbers straight, the ideas moving and occasionally mutters “no” under his breath while doing exactly what he said he wouldn’t do.

But because he genuinely deserves it.

Supporting other small businesses has always been incredibly important to us. From the very beginning, we’ve wanted our shop to be a place where small business owners have a space to share their creativity, their stories, and the things they pour their hearts into.

For a long time, the small businesses we’ve carried have been women-owned, and that has been something especially meaningful to us. But supporting women entrepreneurs has never meant we don’t believe in, appreciate, or want to support talented men who are building something of their own, too.

So today, we’re excited to introduce you to Gavin!

Gavin creates some seriously amazing pieces using laser engraving and cutting, turning wood and other materials into unique, beautifully crafted pieces. We’re so excited to now have some of his work available right here in our shop!

Small business comes in so many forms, and we love being able to give talented makers a little extra space to be seen, discovered, and supported.

We’ve known Gavin his entire life, so getting to watch him grow, create, and build something of his own makes this one especially meaningful for us. We’re proud to have his work in our shop and can’t wait for you to see what he’s been creating!
