Stemming from an ambitious request for help in making a Pinewood Derby car shaped like a Hot Dog, Caressa Hess accidentally (but fortunately) found her love for woodworking. Wishing to appease the energetic wishes of her youngest son, Caressa sought the help of a family friend who assisted her in turning the Hot Dog element of the small vehicle on a wood lathe. That simple project led to another, then another, until she had become immersed in the endless options that could be created with a piece of raw wood, a few tools, and an imagination.

No stranger to creative construction, Caressa has enjoyed many years of sculpting, drawing, and crafting. During the summer months in southwest Washington, Caressa spends countless hours grooming a large garden and then canning fruits, vegetables, jams, and other sauces that hold her family over throughout the year. Her husband and four children frequently boast over the many skills that she brings into their home, especially when they have an opportunity to work with her on one of the many outstanding projects.

Working with wood is an art that changes with every piece and for Caressa, each piece has a special purpose. When asked about how she decides what to make when she picks up a cut of lumber, she replied: “I can usually look at a piece and see a box, a bowl, or something else within it; how they turn out is really all about what I find once I get going.”
