In a late-night deep dive into typography and propaganda posters, I came across the term “poethical”. This refers to how “writing slogans by hand is viewed by some contemporary philosophers as a way to engage with radical thought, bypassing rigid, traditional academic critiques.” People don’t tend to like things that are hard to look at or make them uncomfortable, so cursive writing - with all of its pretty loops and curves - feels like a good way to (literally) smooth over jagged words. And as a typography-obsessed graphic designer with a curious mind, love of rabbit holes, and random bouts of insomnia, I kept diving.
“Cursive writing and feminism intersect in two primary ways: through the historical reclamation of traditional feminine penmanship as a tool for artistic empowerment, and écriture féminine—a literary theory positing that a liberated, emotional language subverts patriarchal structures.” Historically, cursive handwriting was heavily taught to women, and is often associated with domesticity and traditional feminine expression.
The recipe cards in your grandma’s kitchen... what did they look like? Birthday and holiday cards? For me, I think of the softly angled handwriting of my mom, my Nana, my Grande, my aunts... I can identify them all in just a few letters. And now I think of my own handwriting... all caps, in black Sharpie or PaperMate felt-tip pen. 90-degree angles. Bold. Only connecting or curving when the individual letter (“character”, for my design friends) requires it. I always sign my name with a heart, though, and I sometimes think about whether or not to include. In the end I always do - it feels like the 7th letter of my name.
And all of this late night thought - dictated into my phone at 1:12 AM - brought me back to this phrase I’ve been playing around with since January. I knew it’d eventually result in something, but it needed time to develop... to bloom. And now, it has. My own little ode to reclaiming an age old art... a sweetly penned warning, encircled by the dainty Lily of the Valley, all tolling their poisonous, beautiful little bells. Giving permission, giving encouragement, and dare I say - giving damn good typography.💖
