“She carries the ocean in her spirit.”

Black mermaids have always been more than mythical beings to me. They are symbols of beauty, soul, memory, and culture. They remind us that our stories are ancient, sacred, and deeply connected to water—the first place many of our ancestors knew as both a source of life and a passage of transformation.

This piece was inspired by Yemaya, the revered Mother of the Oceans. In art and spiritual practice, she is often depicted as a majestic Black woman or a powerful mermaid, embodying both tenderness and strength. She nurtures, protects, and heals, yet she also commands the fierce, untamable power of the sea when defending her children.

As I created this mosaic, I thought about the stories carried by Black women—their resilience, intuition, beauty, and ability to hold entire worlds within them. Like the tides, we are ever-changing, yet deeply rooted. We are gentle and powerful, soft and unbreakable.

This mermaid sits at the shoreline between day and night, earth and sea, memory and possibility… reminding us that our stories belong in every mythology.

May we always honor the waters that carry our ancestors and the divine feminine that continues to guide us.
