Sashiko is back!

Beginning Sashiko Mending
Wednesday, September 16, 6:30-8:30pm
Cost: $55; Register at https://intro-to-sashiko.eventbrite.com

We miss Cirrus dearly (and if you do too, follow his blog at http://dollarsandyen.com/blog, but we're thrilled to have found another fantastic instructor to carry on the sashiko legacy. Welcome Mickey "Stitch Mouse" Stockley (.mouse)!

In this sashiko mending class students will learn about this hand-sewing technique originally used to reinforce and strengthen textiles. Sashiko utilizes a running stitch to create beautiful patterns while also mending everyday clothing, blankets, quilts and so much more. Students will be able to work with traditional tools and sashiko supplies to hand mend their ripped, torn or distressed garments and textiles while learning specialized techniques to create a truly individual piece of sustainable fiber art.

All materials are provided for this course; students only need to bring a piece of medium-weight, non-stretch cotton or linen clothing they wish to repair or embroider. Suggested fibers are denim and heavier cotton, such as jeans or overshirts with holes around 1 to 4 inches in width. (Or you may uses fabric pieces from the Depot.)

All skill levels are welcome and students will be encouraged to work at their own pace while learning how to patch a hole and create a grid to stitch their design.

Instructor: Mickey Stockley
Bay Area based instructor Mickey Stockley comes from a long line of fiber artists and has enjoyed creating using multiple mediums her whole life. Her passions include sashiko, quilting, upcycling clothing, slow fashion and hoarding fabric. She currently works at Kimonomomo as the second generation in the small family run business and enjoys sharing her knowledge with anyone excited to create and learn. .mouse

Introduction to Machine Sewing
Wednesday, September 9, 6:30-8:30pm

Learn the basics of machine sewing in a relaxed, supportive environment! Machines will be provided to learn on, or bring your own sewing machine and the instructor will help you get familiar with how your machine works.

Through a simple, practical project, you’ll learn essential sewing skills including sewing straight lines, using the reverse/backstitch function, turning corners, and controlling your fabric and machine. We’ll also practice basic hand-sewing techniques to finish the project.

Our class project will be a simple rice-filled, microwavable neck pillow. You’ll leave with a useful handmade item while building the confidence and foundational skills to continue sewing on your own.

Instructor: Gir Session
Cost: $65, register at https://intro-to-machine-sewing.eventbrite.com
