Honored that our friend Chef Ben Maides wears an ARTIFACT apron. At Au Courant Regional Kitchen, his James Beard–recognized pursuit of excellence inspires us. In our own way, we’ve been chasing that same spirit since 2010 — crafting aprons in our Omaha studio for professionals who care about their tools as much as their craft.

For all his innovation and pioneering, surprisingly little has been written about Chuck Williams, founder of Williams-Sonoma. Merchant of Sonoma glosses over parts of his personal life, but it nails the chronology of his rise as a tastemaker and entrepreneur — and sets him firmly in the cultural currents of his time.

Why Chuck Williams is the GOAT of Home Goods Retail

1. He invented a category.
2. He mastered curation over clutter.
3. He married authenticity with scale.
4. He turned the WS catalog into a cultural engine.
5. His long view ensured the brand’s longevity.

Fun Facts / Why He’s a Badass

1. Raised by another family during the Depression, he worked on their California date farm as a teen.
2. Served as a WWII airplane mechanic (Lockheed) in India and East Africa.
3. Contractor and carpenter — he personally designed and built his first three homes.
4. Bought a Sonoma hardware store in 1953 and converted it into a French cookware destination.
5. Opened the first “Williams-Sonoma” cookware-focused store in 1956.
6. No formal culinary training, yet wrote/edited over 100 cookbooks.
7. Lived to 100 (1915–2015).
8. Attended the reopening of the original Sonoma store at age 99.

Mother’s Day is a chance to say thank you - for the care, the patience, and the steady support that so often goes unspoken.

This year, we’re offering complimentary monogramming (a $20 value) to help you personalize a gift as thoughtful as she is. Whether it’s her initials stitched into an heirloom apron or a custom tote made just for her, we’ll help you make it hers.

Order by this Sunday (May 4th) to ensure delivery in time for Mother’s Day.

Craft & leisure are the special activities we do to reset and find meaning from the stress of daily life. They are instrumental in maintaining balance.

These activities can be challenging and rewarding. They can be creative. They can be purposeful and goal oriented, or unstructured and escapist.

Think about the activities you do for relaxation and pleasure. Hold them dear because they are vital in preserving mental health and well being.

Since 2010, we have been creating small batch products for the enhancement of craft and leisure. Whether that’s a sturdy apron for your garden or workshop, or a bag ideal for travel and adventure, we are purposeful in handmaking quality goods that will enrich your journey.
