Art By Jose Belen

Art By Jose Belen Jose Belen is a self taught expressionism artist who turned his battlefield pain from his time in war into a passion to help others find healing through art.

Who is José Belén

Born in Manhattan, New York of 100% Puerto Rican decent (Yauco, PR) José Belén can be described as a versatile and freestyle thinker, who grew into an artist organically without realizing he had a hidden talent. A man who once looked at his hands with disdain, for they were once instruments of war. Upon creating his first artistic piece, José realized the healing possibilities

of art in the color red. On the battlefield José bore witness to the blood of his own best friend and brothers in arms and upon that moment, he was never able to move away from the thought of how the color red appeared to him. In painting his first red stripe, he found a healing that he had never felt before. José’s creative flow and process are inspired by the music he listens to as he builds and paints his pieces the same way he’d listen to music prior to and during his missions in combat. José is self taught and driven by a passion to create pieces of healing, love and unity. The Utilization of his hands that were once used for war, are now used to create memorable pieces of art. From this, José Belén was reborn as an artist. He was able to heal, he was able to grow. It provided light at the end of the tunnel. A combat vet save by art. José can be described by these three words. Versatile , Real and Limitless... These core elements ensured José’s survival on the battlefield even while facing certain death. Now José aims to keep the realness here at home, battling PTSD using his God given talent that took his hands from instruments of war, to instruments of love and unity. He Hopes to illuminate the path for all veteran's, all human beings that have felt they could have been the next suicide statistic and to realize that they too, have a purpose and it’s in helping one another heal...A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle….

The inspiration behind this canvas is quite deep however I feel it is time to share in the spirit of healing our traumas & giving life & color to memories that were shrouded in darkness…

Baghdad, Iraq 2003

We were taking inbound casualties…anyone who has been there understands the importance of every second counts…When I realized who we were tasked with carrying and sprinting with her body in our arms to the med station it hit me like a freight train….her eyes were open…wearing a white dress…all they kept screaming was headshot headshot she took a headshot!! It didn’t make sense there was no blood and gore just this innocent little girl with her eyes wide open…and a headshot that went through her head…she had a faint pulse and all I could do was stare in her eyes as we carried her saying don’t go don’t go don’t go!

We laid her down on the table…The docs did everything they could in those moments…but then they called it…she was gone…now we carried her lifeless…eyes still open…we got her to the transport vehicle and that is when the myself and the two soldiers I was with closed her eyes…this was all so twisted…I remember telling myself this is what happens in war and to get over it…if anything that child is a example of the millions that have died in war on this earth….That day my heart turned ice cold…the last little bit I had left…left with her…

The reality is I never stopped looking up and praying for that little girl always looking up at the sky & believing she is in the happiest place where there is no pain…that she is up above in a place where the clouds are made of cotton candy…

That is the inspiration behind my “Cotton Candy Clouds” canvas & why you see the flower pedals as well.
