We're growing our apiary! The last thing I do after installing a nuc into their new home is shake the box out to send any remaining bees inside. It looks chaotic, but these girls were so calm and sweet! Expanding means more honey and beeswax for our bath + body products, but also that we'll be selling our honey starting in the fall!

Earlier this summer, I talked about hot bees. Here is another video of how amazing a hive is in hot weather.

This is called bearding. You can see them clustering under the entrance board. Florida's summer heat and humidity make the hive too warm, thousands of worker bees gather on the outside of the hive. By moving out, they create more space inside for air to circulate while other workers fan their wings to pull cooler air through the colony.

It may look alarming if you've never seen it before, but this is perfectly normal. It's one of the amazing ways honey bees work together to keep their home at the right temperature for the queen, brood, and honey stores.

Every bee has a job, and on hot summer days, some become the hive's air-conditioning crew.

Ask me your bee questions or give me suggestions for something you want to learn about beekeeping!

With love,
The Blue Horizon Beekeeper

Fresh herbs. Slow infusions. No shortcuts.

Today we're starting a new batch of herbal-infused oils using calendula, plantain, and chickw**d, slowly infused into olive oil over the coming weeks.

Why these herbs?

Calendula is loved for its soothing, calming properties and has long been used to comfort dry, irritated skin.

Plantain is one of nature's best skin herbs, traditionally used to help support minor scrapes, bug bites, and everyday skin recovery.

Chickw**d is known for its cooling, comforting feel and is a favorite for itchy, dry, or irritated skin.

By slowly infusing these botanicals into olive oil, we gently capture many of their skin-loving compounds—creating an ingredient that becomes the heart of our next product.
These slow-infused oils will become the heart of our newest product...

The Beekeeper's Balm.

Made with our own beeswax and thoughtfully chosen botanicals, it's being created for gardeners, beekeepers, outdoor lovers, and anyone whose hands—and skin—work as hard as they do.

This is one of our favorite parts of creating products: watching simple, natural ingredients transform with nothing more than time and patience.

Stay tuned as we share the journey from fresh herbs...to finished balm.

Before you pull it... before you mow it... leave it for the bees.

This little native bee visitor was gathering pollen from a Spanish needle growing in what many people would call a "w**d patch."

To us, it's one of the most important plants in the yard right now.

Most of our spring flowers have finished blooming, and we're now in what Florida beekeepers call the "summer dearth".

As the intense heat and humidity settle in, nectar sources become much harder to find. Honey bees, native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators have to work much harder for every meal.

That's why we leave the Spanish needle, bidens, and other volunteer wildflowers growing around our property. What looks messy to us can be a lifeline to pollinators during one of the toughest times of the year.

So before you fire up the mower this weekend, take a second look. If you have a patch of Spanish needle or other blooming wildflowers, consider leaving a little corner untouched.

Your local bees will thank you!

With love,
The Blue Horizon Beekeeper

PS - Native bees and native plants are another side-quest passion. More on that subject another time!

We've been crafting a facial care line. Today, we're making the Overnight Renewal Face Balm. This heavier balm includes sea buckthorn oil, pomegranate oil, squalene, our beeswax, and bakuchiol.

Sea buckthorn and pomegranate oils are rich in antioxidants, while squalane helps lock in lasting moisture. Bakuchiol, a plant-derived ingredient often called a gentle alternative to retinol, helps support smoother-looking, more radiant skin without the harshness many people associate with traditional retinoids. Finished with beeswax from our own hives, this overnight balm is designed to deeply nourish while you sleep
