There’s nothing better than a client thrilled with a new look, whether installing new or refinishing existing hardwood or a custom tile shower or floor.

Tiled around a shower enclosure in a hangar, the layout would have left me with little rips at the top and side, which would not look great and burns a lot of tile. They bought the tile 4 years ago so it wasn’t available anymore and the amount was tight enough that I was worried about running short. To solve it I suggested a border around the shower, flowing into base around the rest of the room. It worked great to not have tiny rips and I think it sets it off pretty nicely.

Last weeks shower, tub surround, and bathroom floor, the 24”x48” wall tiles were a bear, almost every one was a cut or had holes drilled. Sure looked great though, I like the clean lines of the black trims and simple look. Hope to get some finished pictures when it’s all painted, cabinets and fixtures are in. When I wrapped it up, the homeowner said how she never thought she’d have a bathroom like this, I didn’t understand what she meant until she said she grew up with an outhouse!

Last weeks job, I installed prefinished solid birch over old concrete. It needed 6 mil v***r barrier and subfloor, I used a ramset to nail down the OSB subfloor down to the concrete. It’ll match the other side of the house which was Alaskan wood that I sanded and finished a few years ago, I’m hoping to get some final pics in a few weeks when they wrap it up.

Wrapped up this maple floor last week, we actually refinished this one last year, but a water leak damaged a large area which needed to be torn out. The original floor was maple shorts, the average board was less than 30 inches long but manufacturers don’t make it anymore so we tore out the entire thing and installed all new maple, the average board is closer to 5 feet or so. The original treads were a golden stained pine, so we made new treads and risers as well to match the floor.

I really should post things as I do them, this was nearly 6 months ago and a lot of work. Ripped out the old tiny shower enclosure, had a plumber move the toilet to make the shower bigger, cleaned up the heavy blotchy texture and retextured everything, moved the plumbing and electrical onto different walls, waterproofed the shower, set the tile, installed a barn door so it wouldn’t interfere with the glass shower door, set the cabinet, mirror, lights, towel bars, etc. Many times I’m only on a job to do a specific thing like install wood or tile, this was fun because I got to use more of my skills.

Some before, during, and after pics of a recent backsplash, they didn’t want a new color but wanted a nice tile backsplash. These white textured glass tiles were the ticket for a clean but custom look, it’s always a challenge to make it look as random as possible, kinda like a big one color puzzle. With everything else there, wood cabinets, stone countertop, and herringbone Jatoba floors, it didn’t need more color or patterns, they chose a great tile for it.

Picked up a little something different last week for a neighbor, though I don’t have any pics of the main reason I was there. The flat area on the right side was a bunch of rough cut spruce boards laid over insulation and years ago a cat had spent a lot of time up there using the facilities so it was pretty stinky. I removed the boards and the insulation underneath it and replaced it with new insulation and screwed down subfloor. The old roll roofing needed some kind of update as well, so it got corrugated roofing, a new vent, and a new light. It looks much better, and more importantly smells much better!

Made a new desk to go in the new office, it’s white oak and maple with iron acetate on it, you dissolve steel into vinegar, strain it, then wipe it on like a stain, and it reacts with the tannins in the white oak to make these dark colors. It will react with other woods as well, but white oak has the biggest reaction and most boards turn black and various greys. I diluted it with water for the desk so the desk wouldn’t be so black. The lighter boards in the border are maple, which don’t react much with the iron ascetate.

Before, during, and completed new tile shower for a neighbor, pretty nice commute! We were crossing our fingers that we would be able to move the valve to the other side of the shower and at least put the drain in the middle, the framing was right so we were able to do that.  With the tile you only lose about half an inch off a wall instead of several inches lost in a fiberglass enclosure so it makes the space more open. I also put the shower head 7 feet off the floor instead of less than 6 feet so nobody will have to duck to wash their hair.
