This set of crayons is years in the making: PHILLY CHARCOAL - During a winter orchard care and pruning workshop with the Philadelphia Orchard Project we removed mummified fruit from a peach tree at Sankofa Community Farm at Bartram’s Garden, and collected some for this natural color experiment. We also collected peach pits from the base of a peach tree outside of the Warrington Street Community Garden in West Philadelphia—where I was gifted the best peach I’ve ever eaten in my entire life—and from the Open Kitchen Sculpture Garden. This year at the Fair Amount Food Forest, we collected shells from below the hardy almond (a cross between a peach and an almond tree) to add to the collectionOnce we had enough to fill an old tea tin, we transformed them into charcoal as outlined by Nick Neddo in The Organic Artist for Kids. We added birthday wishes written on bits of paper to the fire and intentions for a magical fire. Once cooled the pit charcoal was ground into a fine powder and mixed with beeswax from Harvey’s Honey and wax gifted from Pia St. Onge to create these color blocks.
