Joan Ruth “Kiki” Bader Ginsburg dedicated herself to women’s empowerment through example and tenacity of spirit in the her life and in the sociopolitical realm. I am so grateful for her hard work and in awe of the legacy that she left behind. Her passing is still deeply mourned.
This limited series of five macrame feathers is now live on moonbaby.life (link in bio) and 20% of those sales will be donated to breadrosesfund.org in her honor’s honor. It’s that I show support to my community in Philadelphia during this trying time in our collective history.
I chose this organization not only for their history of excellent work in Philly, but also bc of the inspiration behind their name: This poem penned by James Oppenheim was an homage to a speech given by women’s suffrage activist Helen Todd in 1911 in which she said “...bread for all, and roses too!” I find it apropos now as ever:
Bread and Roses
As we come marching, marching in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing: “Bread and roses! Bread and roses!”
As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men,
For they are women’s children, and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!
As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient call for bread.
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew.
Yes, it is bread we fight for — but we fight for roses, too!
As we come marching, marching, we bring the greater days.
The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
No more the drudge and idler — ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life’s glories: Bread and roses! Bread and roses!
