I know I haven't posted in a long while, and it's because... I'm Semi-Retired now! WooHoo! So far I can hardly feel the difference, but am slowly catching up on all my home project and family stuff etc. I'm still doing projects for my existing clients and STAR CONTRACTOR John Gemmi, but definitely slowing down... and just recently... I've started oil painting again.. doing Art.. I haven't done much in ten years and was worried that I'd forgotten how, but I'm doing it and loving it-on Sundays.. So I'm an actual "Sunday Painter!" HAAH! I'm taking lessons with Stephanie Lieberman at the Woodmere Art Museum. I LOVE her work!

I know I haven't posted in awhile-COVID and all, but now the "market" is heating up and I'm swamped with work. Meanwhile, some of my "Covid Era' projects are being installed. And I've been doing this so long that THIS is what makes my day! A client just sent it to me. She's THRILLED over the whole Kitchen, but wanted me to see this especially. What do you think? It's a Dog Food etc cabinet!

Here's another joint project with the Team at Gemmi Construction. As a Designer, when John Gemmi and his Crew are on board, I can always rest assured that the details will be perfect and perfectly beautiful!

The current trend with large open bathrooms is to separate the commode, allowing for privacy and more of a sanctuary feeling in the main area. In redesigning this bathroom, due to its location over the garage we were able to reconfigure the sewer lines for the new layout. To accomplish this, we expa...

I LOVE transforming someone's home without having to add on to the space. This Master Bathroom was a horrible mess when we first started. It had a huge 16 foot ceiling waaaay out of human proportion for the size of the room and ugly, dated fixtures and fittings. We brought the ceiling down with a peaked feature, added chandeliers, added storage, and updated everything. Can't wait to have it professionally photographed because Bathrooms are very difficult to capture in pictures.

The SCIENCE Behind the BEST STONE TOPS:
PS: I don’t mention the cost of materials because they’re generally similar and vary from fabricator to fabricator.

NATURAL-GOD-MADE-STONES:
1. GRANITE: Is a -God-Made- extremely hard, igneous rock (spewed up from volcanos for example) consisting mainly of quartz, mica, and feldspar and often used as a building stone. Granite boulders are laboriously cut into slabs and honed or polished to make them into countertops. Granite tops are easy to clean, extremely durable, heat proof, and scratch resistant. The Granite tops in our Kitchen have been there for over (20) YEARS, and when cleaned look brand new! (We cook a LOT and are not very tidy!) Granite also comes in a lot of different colors, but many are fairly “speckled” which not everyone loves.
2. QUARTZITE: Quartzite is also a natural -God-made- rock which was originally pure quartz sandstone. (Quartzite is metamorphic meaning that the Sandstone is converted into quartzite through heating and pressure usually related to tectonic compression (in other words-by God.) The boulders are fabricated into countertops in a process similar to Granite. Quartzite has the exact same physical properties as Granite-is easy to clean, heat-proof, scratch resistant and durable) and also comes in a lot of colors. The pattern of each slab is limited by natural formation and may be inconsistent from one end of a slab to the other.
3. MARBLE: Marble is also a -God-Made- metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. As a countertop it’s heat resistant like Grainte and Quartzite, BUT can be scratched and/or permanently stained by chemicals, hard water, or acids like RED WINE and VINEGAR! The reason people LOVE Marble is its unsurpassed beauty! It often comes in very light or white and includes lovely gray veining. I don’t generally recommend Marble for Kitchen Tops (especially now that we have ENGINEERED QUARTZ STONE available-See Below) unless the client is well educated and chooses it anyway. Before choosing Marble in a Kitchen ask yourself, “Do I want to be the “Countertop Police?” On the other hand, Marble is appropriate to use in Master Baths where the traffic is lighter and “more adult.”
4. SOAPSTONE: Another -God-Made-material, Soapstone is a talc-schist, which is a type of metamorphic rock. It is composed largely of the magnesium rich mineral talc. Soapstone is often a mid-tome to darker gray. It’s heat-proof, but needs to be sealed against staining (hard water, RED WINE etc) and WILL SHOW SCRATCHES. Clients often choose SOAPSTONE for the softness of the feel and also the soft flannel gray color; they must be accepting of the patina that will appear over time. (PS: You can get a very convincing soft flannel Soapstone look by honing Black Absolute Granite, but it will still be more vulnerable than polished Granite.)

MANUFACTURED or ENGINEERED STONE:
1. QUARTZ: Quartz is a hard, crystalline mineral composed of silicon and oxygen atoms, but that’s NOT what the Countertops are, and that’s why it’s confusing. Tops made of Quartz should rightfully be called MANUFACTURED or ENGINEERED QUARTZ TOPS because they are made BY MAN (or WOMEN) of 70-90%+/- Quartz combined with polyester resin, ethenylbenzene (also known as styrene), pigments, and other additives! The reason we make these tops is to control the color and pattern of the material while retaining most of the durability and functionality of Granite tops. ENGINEERED QUARTZ TOPS are unaffected by most chemicals, and heat and scratch resistant- but they WILL SCORTCH at very high heat due to the polyester resin and other additives. The best part is that you can get very light colors with soft veining -like Carrerra Marble-like finishes- in ENGINEERED QUARTZ TOPS!

So there you have it; the Science behind STONE TOPS. My recommendation is to choose the most functional material for Kitchen Tops that will satisfy your desire for color. So, if you want a darker stone Granite is still King, but if you want a Carrera Marble-like finish go with an ENGINEERED QUARTZ TOP! If you’re remodeling a Master Bath, by all means, choose whatever material makes your heart sing!

Here's a FUN project for a dear client with whom I've worked for over 20 years! It's not completely finished, but you get the idea... We COMPLETELY re-arranged and renovated the entire First Floor- all but a Full Bath that we'd redesigned some years ago. The Dining Room- now a bright warm space-is where a dark Sitting Room used to be-and includes a big beautiful Fireplace.. The Kitchen-with a long and lean Island is where the old Kitchen and Dining Room used to be (yes, it was very small,) The Living Room -with a raised ceiling and a brand new Fireplace-is now where a damp old enclosed porch used to be, and the new Laundry Room with Utility/Mudroom capabilities is behind that. Voila! A cheerful and 100% functional solution to a difficult space!

HOW TO STAY HAPPY, and KEEP YOUR CONTRACTOR HAPPY, DURING CONSTRUCTION:
1. NAIL DOWN AND DOCUMENT AS MANY DECISIONS AS POSSIBLE: Before demolition begins nail down and document as many firm decisions on materials and specifications as possible. Start with the biggest “blobs” of color (very technical term) -the floors and cabinetry, then the countertops, hardware etc.
2. SIGN the CONTRACT: Your chosen Contractor can now fine tune the budget based on the Final Plans and your selections, and will generate an official Contract for you to sign. This helps prevent misunderstandings on both sides.
3. MAKE VERY FEW OR NO CHANGES ONCE CONSTRUCTION BEGINS: Save yourself and the Contractor the huge stress and potential delay caused by unnecessary changes. There may still be a few critical decisions or minor changes to be made, but if you’ve done your homework these should be minimal.
4. SET UP A TEMPORARY KITCHEN: If your projects includes a Kitchen remodel do yourself a favor and set up a temporary work space wherever possible with a microwave and the Refrigerator, and running water if possible. It’s only fun washing the dishes in the bathtub for about one night. You’re going to be eating out a lot, but if you plan ahead at least you’ll be able to make coffee, breakfast, lunch and snacks.
5. SHOW YOUR WORKMEN/WOMEN SOME LOVE: Offering drinks, and even snacks, goes a looong way towards building good-will with the skilled craftsmen who will be creating your beautiful new space-even if they don’t take you up on it! Years ago, when I had to have the roof replaced on my first home, I was terrified of the Roofers, so I killed them with kindness-making brownies and HOT coffee (it was January and they were working outside!) After two days they were my new best friends and were going out of their way to do an excellent job!
6. HAVE FUN! By now everything should be running smoothly and on-time so open a bottle of wine and enjoy!
