Rooted in the landscape. Because where we build matters.

A home cannot simply be placed anywhere. It should belong to its land, respond to its climate, and respect the way people build there.

Building in another country means understanding far more than aesthetics. Climate, topography, local regulations, permitting, structural requirements, available materials, craftsmanship, and construction practices all become part of the design conversation.

In this region, seismic considerations are also an essential part of that conversation-one of many reasons collaboration with experienced local architects Par Arquitectura ® and engineers matters.
These decisions reach far beyond the structure. They influence natural light, ventilation, material selections, durability, spatial planning, and the way the interiors connect to the landscape.

For me, this is where interior design truly begins-not with finishes, but with understanding where and how a home is meant to exist.
Because when a home responds thoughtfully to its surroundings, it doesn’t simply sit on the land-
it belongs there.

Great Homes Are Built Through Collaboration.
A beautiful home may begin with a vision, but bringing that vision to life is never the work of one person.

It takes collaboration-between client, designer, architect, engineers, builders, artisans, and the many skilled hands involved along the way.

For me, collaboration means looking beyond what is shown on a drawing. It means considering how the architecture will eventually feel, how the spaces will flow, where furnishings will live, how materials will meet, and whether the decisions being made today support the home we envisioned from the beginning.

When designing a project from another country, that communication becomes even more important.
Drawings, renderings, virtual meetings, site visits, questions, revisions-and sometimes more questions-are all part of protecting the integrity of the design as it moves from paper to construction.

Because long before the finishes arrive, some of the most important design decisions have already been made.
And little by little, what we once imagined begins to take shape.

I had planned to share a more personal side of my time in Colombia, but sometimes circumstances change the story. Some reflections are better given time.
For now, what feels right is to begin with the project that brought me there-and something I believe deeply about design: a home begins long before you see the finishes.
Long before the furniture, fabrics, and beautiful details come the ideas, conversations, drawings, collaborations with Par Arquitectura ®, problem-solving, and decisions that ultimately shape how a home will live and feel.

And before all of that, there is the land.
Its contours. Its light. Its surroundings. Its character.

For this international project in Colombia, that is where the story begins.
So I thought I would take you behind the scenes and show you where this one really began.

The prologue.

Thank you to everyone who has called, written, and reached out from near and far to ask about my family and friends in Colombia.

On Monday morning, a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, severely affecting Pereira—the city I call home.

Watching the devastation from afar has been heartbreaking. It is difficult to describe the feeling of helplessness that comes with seeing familiar streets, homes, and communities changed in a matter of seconds—and being reminded of just how fragile life can be.

I am deeply grateful that my family and many of my friends are safe and accounted for. So many others have not been as fortunate. Families have lost their homes, their businesses, and, most painfully, people they love.

And yet, amid so much heartbreak, I have been profoundly moved by the humanity unfolding throughout Colombia. Neighbors helping neighbors. Volunteers clearing rubble. Rescue workers continuing their search. People giving blood, food, shelter, and whatever they have to help someone they may have never met.

That is the Colombia I know.

The strength, generosity, and love I have witnessed make me incredibly proud of my country—and grateful for the support arriving from around the world.

It’s interesting how time away can be both expansive and grounding.
Providing space for reflection, redefinition, and restoration.
I’ve just come home from a few weeks of travel, work and, some delightful family adventures.

So much to share and discuss and, I can’t wait to dive in with you.

There’s something special about summer holidays.

They remind us that one of life’s greatest luxuries is simply spending time with the people we love.

Gathering around a backyard table. Sharing stories on the front porch. Lingering over a meal in the kitchen that has quietly become the heart of the home. Or simply finding a peaceful moment alone in a hammock in a quiet corner.

These are the moments that give a home its meaning and become the memories we carry with us for years to come.

A home reveals itself over time.

Not in the first week after it’s completed.

Not during the photoshoot.

But in the quiet rhythm of everyday life.

The chair everyone naturally chooses.

The corner where conversations linger.

The window where morning coffee somehow tastes a little better.

Good design isn’t static.
It evolves alongside the people who live within it.

The most meaningful homes aren’t the ones that remain untouched.

They’re the ones that become more beautiful through living.

That is exactly what thoughtful design is meant to do.

One of the things I have learned over the years is that inspiration rarely arrives when we’re looking for it.
It appears while traveling through an unfamiliar places. In the pages of a beautiful book. During a conversation over dinner. In a piece of artwork that stops us in our tracks.

For me, it often arrives in the quiet moments just before sleep. An idea suddenly becomes clear—a color palette, a furniture arrangement, or an unexpected solution-and before I know it, my mind is wandering through the possibilities long after the lights have gone out.

Design has taught me to pay attention.

To notice how light enters a room.

How local materials are utilized and how they age.

How architecture shapes the way we move and feel.

How certain places stay with us long after we’ve left them.

As June comes to a close, I’m reminded that great homes begin long before furniture selections and floor plans.
They begin with curiosity.
And with a willingness to see beauty where others might overlook it.
