What if you don’t know your design style?

It’s one of the most common concerns I hear and it’s so valid. Most clients don’t come to me with a clear vision. They come with pieces they like and a feeling they want their home to reflect, but no clear way to bring it together.

That’s where I come in.

This client said it best, what mattered most was being heard. Taking what she was drawn to and shaping it into something more cohesive, elevated, and complete than she imagined.

That’s the process.

It’s not about fitting you into a style. It’s about creating a home that truly feels like yours.

There are standard spacing guidelines I use when planning rooms, and they matter. But real homes don’t always fit perfectly into a textbook layout.

Sometimes I push a chair a little closer.
Sometimes I fit one more seat at the table.
Sometimes a walkway is a few inches tighter than the “rule.”

Good design isn’t just about following rules perfectly. It’s about making a home work for the people who live there.

Not everything in a room has to match perfectly.

In fact, when every wood tone and metal is the same, a room can fall flat. The rooms that are the most interesting usually have a mix of materials, maybe a dominant wood tone with a darker accent, or mostly black metal with a touch of brass. The key is that it looks intentional and balanced, not accidental.

Wallpaper doesn’t have to be limited to an accent wall or a hallway.
Some of the most memorable rooms I’ve worked on have wallpaper in the dining room, living room, or primary bedroom. It adds depth, personality, and a feeling that the room was really considered.

Good News! Wallpaper is not the commitment it used to be. It’s easy to hang and remove, with thousands of options in every style and color you can imagine.

Don’t be afraid of dark colors in small rooms.

A small room painted white doesn’t automatically feel bigger. Sometimes a deeper color makes the room feel intentional, cozy, and complete.

I often tell clients to think of small rooms as jewel boxes. Powder rooms, offices, and dens are great places to do something a little bolder than you might in a large open space.

Instead of trying to make the room feel bigger, focus on the outcome that feels the way you desire.

I'm excited to share that I'm collaborating with Lauren Todaro, personal trainer at Steel Fitness Main Line, to help clients design home gyms that support their health and wellness goals.

A successful home gym starts with the right equipment for your goals. Next, it's the environment, layout, lighting, and the room's feeling that determine whether the space becomes part of your routine.

Lauren brings the fitness expertise, and I bring the design and space planning. Together, we help homeowners create spaces that support the life they want to live.

Recently, I spent the day at the PA Furniture Market meeting local furniture makers. I
always love finding ways to support our local economy and bring unique, well-made pieces to my clients’ homes.

One thing that really stood out this trip was the outdoor furniture. There were so many beautiful options for creating comfortable, inviting spaces to gather with
friends and family. If refreshing or creating a new outdoor space is on your list this year, let’s connect and talk about what’s possible.

Happy First Day of Spring!🌷🌷🌷

Spring is often when people feel the urge to refresh a room, open the windows, move things around, add fresh flowers, or tackle that space that hasn’t quite felt right. Our homes should grow and change with us. Sometimes even a small shift can make a space feel new again.

I’d love to know, what’s one thing in your home you’re ready to refresh this Spring?

Design lesson: Spaces in your home don't live in isolation.
When this family renovated their kitchen on their own, they did a beautiful job, and the adjacent dining room felt disconnected.

An important part of interior design is creating a visual bridge between spaces so your home feels cohesive rather than a series of separate rooms.

The result is a dining room that feels intentional within the home's flow while still maintaining its own personality. Great design isn't just about making one room beautiful. It's about making your whole home work harmoniously together.

If you've completed one renovation but the surrounding rooms still feel unfinished, I'd love to help you create that connection. Schedule a Design Discovery Call to start the conversation. https://susanrainsdesigncalendar.as.me/discoveryconsult

One of the details I love most in this dining room is the light fixture above the table.

It’s a piece that rewards you the more you look at it. From across the room or from the side, it reads as an interesting sculptural form. But when you’re seated at the table and look up, its true shape is revealed, a lotus unfolding overhead.

That dual experience makes it especially fitting for a dining room. Whether you’re walking through the space or gathered around the table, it offers something different to appreciate from every angle.

Beautiful design often lives in these small moments of discovery.
