Kentucky Coal Crafters

Kentucky Coal Crafters Figurines and jewelry handcrafted with coal. Selling both wholesale and retail. After buying the business I relocated it to Pikeville, Ky.

Kentucky Coal Crafters began as Midwest Crafts in Whitley City, Ky from 1975-2002. Alvin Powell and Buddy Wilson decided to buy the mold and mixing secrets and open as Kentucky Crafters and moved to Stearns Ky next to the Big South Fork Scenic Railway. Along the way, Buddy left and two new partners, Rosetta and Milton joined Alvin and continued coal crafting until September 2023 when they approach

ed me about buying their business. Alvin who was there from the beginning has trained me in the art of coal crafting and making the molds for the figurines. Coal crafting is a process of mixing coal dust with resin and pouring the mixture into molds that are made on site. I am also able to make custom pieces as long as there is something I can use to form the mold. I am also bringing jewelry back to the catalog and website. I sell both retail and wholesale to businesses with a resell certificate. There are several places nearby selling our items. As I get the chance I will add those to this page. A few place where you can by KCC figurines: Jenny Wiley State Park, Prestonsburg, Ky; Breaks Interstate Park, Breaks, Va; Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park, Big Stone Gap, Va; Kentucky Coal Museum, Benham, Ky; Anthracite Heritage Museum, Scranton, Pa; Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, Beckley, Wv and Honeysuckle Vine, Berea, Ky.

I just finished the last of 34 K**b Creek Abraham Lincoln Boyhood Cabin coal figurines. K**b Creek is where Abraham Lincoln said some of his earliest childhood memories were made. The original cabin was torn down in 1870, but it was later reconstructed using logs from the cabin of a friend of Lincoln’s family. Interestingly, that same friend is credited with saving young Abraham Lincoln from drowning.

These 34 figurines are headed to the Abraham Lincoln Museum in Hodgenville. If you’re ever in the area, be sure to visit both the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park and the Abraham Lincoln Museum in downtown Hodgenville. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about Abraham Lincoln’s Kentucky roots and the history of Hodgenville and LaRue County.

Getting ready to pack and ship this order to Dogpatch Trading Post in London, Kentucky. So if you happen to be in that neighborhood, stop by and see them. I appreciate them supporting my small business and carrying Kentucky Coal Crafters products.

Kentucky Coal Crafters would like to welcome the Lincoln Museum as our newest customer. They have placed their first order, and we are proud to partner with them.

The museum is located just three miles north of the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park and about seven miles west of K**b Creek, making it a great stop for anyone exploring the history of Abraham Lincoln.

We truly appreciate their interest in carrying our coal figurines, and we wish them much success with these products.

If you are traveling through Kentucky, take time to visit the museum and the nearby national park. It is well worth the trip.

I just finished the third Heritage Miner that will be heading to Windber Pennsylvania for Windber Coal Miners Day, sponsored by the Eureka Coal Heritage Foundation. I appreciate their order and the opportunity to be a part of honoring our mining heritage.

I am still working on several more pieces and getting everything ready so it can ship out in the very near future. More updates to come as these items are completed.

I am working on another part of the order for the Windber Coal Miners Day Festival coming up in June. The item on the table right now is a Christmas box of coal.

This is real Pike County Kentucky coal, mined right here at home. I take it, break it up, and package it into these boxes, each one finished with a tag that reads, Santa checked his list, he checked it twice, but bless your soul, all you got is this box of coal.

It is never too early to think about Christmas, and these will be ready well ahead of the season. Once this order is complete, these boxes will be heading to Pennsylvania.

Just a little bit of holiday cheer here at the end of March.

It’s a busy day in the shop today as I’ve started working on an order for the Eureka Coal Heritage Foundation’s upcoming event, the Windber Miners Day Festival.

One of the more tedious tasks today has been filling these small glass bottles with coal dust. It takes some time, but it’s meaningful work. For those of us who grew up around coal and spent time near the mines, it’s easy to take it for granted. But for folks who have never been around coal or experienced that part of our heritage, having a small piece of it means something. That’s exactly what these are for, and they’ll be available during the festival.

I’ve also started on some of the heritage miners pieces and have three completed so far, just needing to finish them up. I’ll be posting more items as I continue working through everything.

As always, I truly appreciate the support for my small business.

UPS picked up one order heading into West Virginia yesterday, and today I am working on another shipment going north into Pennsylvania.

This one is headed to Windber for the 25th Annual Windber Miners Day Festival. Windber, has a long and proud coal history dating back to its founding in 1897. The festival is sponsored by the Eureka Coal Heritage Foundation and honors the coal miners who worked and sacrificed in that region. They celebrate with parades, live music, car shows, and vendors, bringing the whole community together around that shared heritage.

Windber itself was originally established by the Berwind White Coal Mining Company, a name that some folks here in our part of the country will recognize. It is always interesting to see how connected these coal communities are, even across state lines.

This will be our second order for their event, and I truly appreciate the continued support. Repeat customers mean everything to a small business, and I am proud that Kentucky Coal Crafters can be a small part of honoring coal mining history in places like Windber.

It also gets you thinking. In a region like ours, where coal built so many communities and provided for so many families, we really do not have many events dedicated to honoring that legacy. The men who worked the mines and those who gave their lives doing it deserve to be remembered. It would be something special to see more of that kind of recognition here at home.
