Mi mamá, Beatriz 🕊️
This one is difficult for me to write. I lost my mother in March after a very short battle with Alzheimer’s. Watching her lose pieces of herself and seeing her deteriorate in front of me was heartbreaking, and those final images are still difficult to erase from my mind. I don’t know if her short battle was a blessing in disguise, but I know how terrible this disease is. I’m trying to remember her as she was before Alzheimer’s: the loving mother, wife, sister, cousin, aunt, and grandma who was the rock of our family. She was beautiful, classy, fun, and caring. She loved shopping, her policiacas, her novelas, crossword puzzles, and watching deer at the park alongside my dad.
The very last words I ever heard my mom say to me were, “Te amo.” She hugged me tightly, with more energy than I’d felt from her in weeks. I told her I loved her too and that everything was going to be okay. Sometimes, I regret saying that because, not long after, everything wasn’t okay. But even as Alzheimer’s took away so much of her ability to communicate, she found a way to tell me she loved me, and I will forever be grateful those were her last words to me. I told Rolo to greet her when it was her time, and I’m positive he did. I can picture my mom giving him the biggest hug because she really did love him.
I miss my mom every minute of every day. I still cry, I still get angry, and I still talk to her on my drives home from work. Sometimes I hear her voice in my head, and other times a memory makes me smile. Part of me finds comfort in knowing she’s no longer in pain and imagining her with her godmother, sister, mom, dad, and Rolo, but I still find myself needing her. I’m thankful I got to have this amazing woman as my mother. I hope she’s resting easy and watching over us, because even though she’s gone, we still need her. Te amo, mamá. For the rest of my life. 🫶🏽
Rolo 🕊️
Rolo was my life and my best friend from the very beginning. He filled a space in my heart that I couldn't find anywhere else. He was i
