There are very few pieces of MCI Maple left. The Trinity Dish is hand carved from a 115-year-old rock maple that stood on the Front Campus of Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, ME. (See photo.) It is a large piece, made from a burl, 23” x 4”.

Burls on trees are typically caused by some form of stress, often resulting in abnormal growth. Stress can be due to fungal, bacterial, or viral infections, insect infestations, or frost damage. The tree's growth hormones are disrupted, leading to the formation of a burl as a protective mechanism in response to the stress.

Surprise! This bowl, the Surprise Bowl made from Cooke Maple is in the Thanksgiving Sale.

This bowl features a big surprise on one side. The β€œbumps” on this bowl are from edge wood. A natural edge refers to the original, unaltered (not milled) edge of a piece of wood. A key feature are the natural curves, knots, and character of the wood which creates a unique and rustic look.

Another piece from the Thanksgiving Sale! This Cooke Maple Tall W**d Pot is perfect for decorative dried grasses. It was crafted from a 123-year-old Pittsfield, Maine silver maple tree. It stands an impressive 16 ΒΌ x 6” and features unique figuring.

Wood figuring, the unique patterns and appearances on wood surfaces, is caused by variations in wood grain orientation and how it reflects light. These variations arise during a tree's growth, and are the result of stress, injury, disease, and the way branches intersect the trunk.

Also included in the Thanksgiving Sale is this MCI Maple Burl, called the Current Board. It is a carved burl from a 115-year-old rock maple that stood on the Front Campus of Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, ME. Looking carefully at the wood grain, you will note movement, like a water current. This piece is 15 3/4" x 9 1/2" and can function as a serving piece, or as art!
