OK, I just read yet another article on what decor is out. I have a few things to say. First, the person writing these articles must be less than 25 years old, as anyone older than that understands that style recycle ever 25-30 years. Case in point: all the green everything that is currently in style. Just ask the color council, that selects the paint colors and other decor items, including fabric, that they decide will be the new trends. Green is in.
A few things I agree with, plastic couch (sofa) covers are out, but honestly, I am pretty old and do not know if I have EVER even seen one of those. Get real.
I read wall mouldings are "out". Are you kidding me? They are classic, they have been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years.
I also read floral wall art is out. Wait, what? Did anybody tell Van Gogh? Or Monet?
Also, paisley fabric is apparently "Out". Hmm, take a look at these amazing new fabrics from Peter Fasano. Stunning. Hardly "out" of style. I would take all those articles with a large grain of salt. Do not adjust your style to fit what they thing is in good taste.

OK, I have kept silent for years, and cannot do so any more. I am not a fan of articles that tell you what is "in" and what is "out for your home. The article I read this morning said that "all white kitchens are out".

Maybe it is because I am old enough yo have seen trends come and go. I am a firm believer that your home should reflect you. All white kitchens have been around for over 100 years. Yes, over a century. I grew up in a home built in 1917 with an all white kitchen. I have been in many historic homes with all white kitchen.
I believe in "timeless" design. What you love should not be based on the latest trend that Target is promoting. (not to speak badly about Target!)

Trends come and go. Those of you who have been around for 40+ years can probably recall some of the trends that are now gone. The chocolate colored stained cabinets of 20 years ago. The Harvest Gold and Avocado Green that some of us grew up with. The s**g carpet... at one time these were all current trends.

A friend of mine, Ed Edward George Postif once told me not to specify biscuit colored plumbing fixtures, as they were "the next avocado green waiting to happen." I have often pondered that advice, I think it was great advice.

Design your spaces to make them places that you love, where your life can happen. If you loved something 10 years ago, you will probably love it in another 10 years. Good classic design is timeless.

A few tips about making a rental property, or even your own home, more maintenance free:
Try pvc moldings for baseboards and casings rather than real wood.
Do not use shades or blinds with cords, and use composite blinds that can easily be hosed off.
Tile the ceiling of the shower. Even an inexpensive white subway tile will be helpful. Otherwise drywall and paint will peel and mildew.
Always put in a bathroom fan that vents outside.
Use LED lightbulbs when possible.
Do not paint over door hingers, change them! To galvanized ones if possible.
Can you tell I am staying someplace that missed a few of these tips!
