This is the side of homesteading that doesn’t make the pretty pictures you see.
We ordered 125 meat birds. Only these 38 were alive when they arrived.
87 chicks were lost in transit. They were crushed and suffocated during shipping. Seeing that box and realizing how many didn’t make it was sad and frustrating.
Raising animals is hard. Trying to build a living through homesteading is hard. There are beautiful days, successful harvests, healthy animals, and moments that remind us exactly why we chose this life.
But every day isn’t sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes you do everything you can on your end and still get handed a loss you never expected.
We are incredibly grateful for the hatchery and the way they have been great through this process.
Even though these birds are going to be processed in 8 weeks, we still want these animals to be respected.
It's not always easy, but it's a part of the journey. Enjoy homesteading.
