SHOP SUPERVISOR AVA | EPISODE 30: THE CLOSEOUT CHECKLIST

Tools home. Cords coiled. Dust collection checked. Lights off.

Kevin marked the list complete. Ava heard the open shop door before management saw it.

One last correction, one clean close, and one supervisor who will be double-checking the important stuff from now on.

A coffee table should earn its place in the room.

Contour brings the character of live-edge white oak to the everyday stuff: coffee within reach, a book set down between chapters, and a room that feels a little more like yours.

Built by hand here in Powell, Ohio.

There’s a point where cleaning up a piece of wood becomes removing everything interesting about it.

With Rooted, I wanted the work to look intentional without making the wood look tame.

What catches your eye first—the fork, the grain, or the overall shape?

SHOP SUPERVISOR AVA | EPISODE 29: THE FINISHING ROOM

The finishing room was ready until Kevin sorted the cans by optimism.

Ava found one filed under “Probably Dry” and issued the only ruling that mattered: dry time is not a suggestion.

The finish can wait. The supervisor will be checking every detail.

I needed a package box.

Naturally, I built a small piece of outdoor furniture instead.

Oversized for real deliveries, with a sloped lid, weather stripping, Canyon Black paint under spar urethane, an oak handle, and corner magnets that hold against wind without fighting the mail carrier.

Probably over-engineered. Exactly as intended.

Packages are dry. Problem solved.

SHOP SUPERVISOR AVA | EPISODE 28: THE CUT LIST

The cut list asked for a 40-inch top rail. The rack offered 36.

Steve proposed improvisation. Ava requested arithmetic. Kevin found the missing four inches under “Future Project,” and the revised plan passed inspection.

Labeling it “future” does not make it inventory control.

White oak on finish day. The grain starts talking, the work gets quiet, and the only responsible move is to stop touching it. 🤷

SHOP SUPERVISOR AVA | EPISODE 27: THE LABEL MAKER

The label maker entered the shop. Fifteen minutes later, the drawers had categories, the clamps had subcategories, and Kevin had a Tuesday-specific jurisdiction.

Ava approved the organization with one clean paw raise. Steve would now like everyone to stop printing labels.

SHOP SUPERVISOR AVA | EPISODE 26: DUST COLLECTION AUDIT

A little sawdust is normal. This is a woodshop, after all.

Apparently, “a little” is open to interpretation. Ava initiated a formal inspection, Kevin documented everything, and management was assigned corrective action.

The collector is empty. The shop is clean. Compliance has been restored by the supervisors who watched the entire process.

There’s a moment in a shop session when the build looks good enough to leave alone.

That is usually when I stop trusting myself and inspect the same surface from one completely unnecessary angle.

The piece is moving forward. My brain is opening another review cycle.

What part of a build pulls you back in for one more check?
