Kahoun Backstreet Barn Llama and Alpaca's

Kahoun Backstreet Barn Llama and Alpaca's Welcome to Kahoun Backstreet Barn Llama and Alpacas! Alpacas were treasured by the ancient Inca and arrived in the U.S. in 1984. Thanks for following along!

We began our journey in 2011 with Journey and Hope—now we’re home to 9 alpacas and 1 llama.

It’s that time of the year when the Kahoun Backstreet Barn alpacas and llamas get their yearly hair cut. The process is called sheering. This year, Riversong Shearing helped us out. They were incredibly kind and patient with the animals and did an excellent job! Unfortunately, the cold weather has stuck around at the worst time. Who would have guessed Mother Nature would be so harsh this spring? It’s been hard to think about our boys and girls outside the nights the temperature falls close to freezing without their warm fleece coats. Thankfully, there have been sunny afternoons to make up for the chilly nights.

I have posted a few before, during and after shearing photos — and it never fails! Every time I go to take a photo they either all stand in one big clump or stick their nose right in the camera.

I have been trying to get new photos of the alpacas but sometimes they just don’t cooperate. You line up the shot, the lighting is perfect, and the p**f they turn around, sneeze or decide it’s snack time. With the recent cold snap they have made it clear: the barn is the place to be We don’t blame them a bit! We love the photos anyway. Even the blurry ones. Here’s to outtakes, the nose smudges and surprise photobombs.

Dude is our next featured alpaca. 🦙 He is a very quiet, gentle and shy boy. Dude is our only white alpaca and the only suri in our herd. Unlike the fluffy, crimpy fleece of the huacaya alpaca, suri fleece is unique —it hangs in long, silky pencil-like locks that drape beautifully down the body. These locks that can be flat, twisted or spiraled, giving Dudes coat a striking and elegant look.👀

Dude has only been with us for a few years, while most of our other alpacas were born here on the farm. Because of his mellow nature, it took him a little longer to make friends, but he has slowly settled into the herd. His favorite companions are Augusta the llama 🦙 and our youngest boy Aries. You can often spot the three of them together, either lounging in the sun ☀️ or gathered around the haystack.

When Dude is sheered, his fleece is often blended as an accent with the black and browns, creating beautiful blankets , scarves, rugs, and more Once again, we can see how each alpaca 🦙 has its own wonderful personality and traits, making alpaca farming so full off fun!🤩

This is Spartacus, our very first cria. He has a blackish-brown coat and holds a special place in our hearts. 💕 His mother, Journey— who sadly passed away recently🥲—was such an important part of our herd.

Spartacus was named after the famous Thracian gladiator who stood for courage🎖️ and strength. 💪🏼Unfortunately, we’re not sure he inherited those qualities—Spartacus is neither especially courageous nor particularly strong. Instead, he is one of our tamest and friendliest 😊alpacas, often choosing to run away🏃‍♂️‍➡️ from conflict rather than face it. He gets along well with most of the herd, though he and Phoenix don’t always see eye to eye, so we keep them apart. What Spartacus may lack in bravery, he more than makes up for it in charm—he loves 💙attention and is usually one of the first to come up to the fence, eager to greet visitors and see what kind of treat they might have for him.🍎🍉🥕🥦

Here are a few pictures of Spartacus and some items made from Spartacus’s fleece. Last year we had a small problem with burdocks in one of our hay bales, and Spartacus ended up being one of the most affected. 😱 Despite the hard work of C& M Alpaca Fiber Mill in processing his fiber, if you look 👀 closely at his yard 🧶you’ll notice tiny flecks of burdocks still woven in. We like to think 🤔 of it as a part of Spartacus’s story—little reminder of the challenges (and character) that come with life on the farm. 🚜

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce you each our alpacas individually and share what makes them unique.

The first is Phoenix, 🦙 our breeding male—known as a herdslre. A herd site is a male alpaca carefully selected for his desirable genetic traits, which he has passed on to his offspring.

Phoenix is a striking grey male with dense fleece and fine fiber. He has already fathered several wonderful crias, each reflecting his strong qualities. True to his name, Phoenix carries himself proudly. While he can be territorial with other males, he is impressive and valuable member of the herd.

I’ve included photos of Phoenix himself, his raw fiber, along with images of his fiber after processing at a mill.

When fleece is shorn each spring, it is carefully sorted into Firsts and seconds.

Firsts come from his blanket - the prime area of the fleece - which is soft, fine, and uniform. These fibers are used for blankets, scarves, and yarn.

Seconds come from the neck and chest. Though not as fine they are still warm and durable, perfect for practical items such as rugs, horse blankets and shoe liners.

Phoenix contributions truly showcase the versatility and beauty alpacas bring to the fiber arts.

In addition to our llama and alpacas, 🐪 Kahoun Backstreet Barn is also the home to a couple of goats 🐐who bring plenty of personality and charm to the farm. Goats 🐐and alpacas 🦙 are very compatible, making them wonderful companions.

Meet Bill and Mavis! Bill is more outgoing of the two, always curious and sometimes mischievous. 😈 Every now and then, Bill surprises us by figuring out how to make his way over the fence. Mavis on the other hand, is more relaxed and easygoing.

Goats 🐐are naturally social animals, and Bill and Mavis are no exceptions. They thrive in each other’s company, reminding us how important it is to have a friend by your side.

Goats 🐐make wonderful pets ~~ they’re smart, playful and full of personality. But there is a catch: you can never quit trust them! 🤔

Llamas and alpacas love💞 spending time outdoors! They're happiest in the fresh air, grazing the pastures or stretching out for a good sunbath. Because they're herd animals, 🦙🦙🦙🦙 you'll almost always see them hanging out together--it makes them feel safe and content. Llama and alpacas are hardy and can handle both hot summers☀️ and chilly winters, ❄️ as long as they have shade, 🌳 shelter 🛖and fresh water 💦nearby. While they'll gladly cozy up in the barn during extreme weather, most days they'd much rather be outside enjoying the open space. I have attached a few pictures showing our alpacas enjoying the different seasons. 🌞🌧⛄️
