at inspired the candle name and scent. In addition to providing quality, hand-poured Soy wax candles with custom-blended scents, Usu Company also promotes an important mission encouraging people to embrace who they are, where they come from, and what they're passionate about--to blaze your own trail.

You can’t tell from looking but…the best part of this scene is all of the history in it.

❤️someone I met in the very first workshop I ever did, who is now a cherished friend.

❤️a fellow Nigerian who I’ve been admired for the past few years as she’s grown professionally, while also always making her family the very clear priority.

❤️someone who has been to at least one class every year, including the private candle event I had the luck of hosting for her

❤️a team of coworkers who made me laugh until I cried during their corporate team build workshop weeks ago, and who came back to hang out together + ring in the new season with a candle

❤️a family owned small business where the owner has welcomed me in for years and always greets me and leaves me with a hug.

The love and community that has been found out of something that started in my living room 5 years ago(!) never ceases to amaze me. Cheers to more moments, more history, more community.

This may be one of my favorite things that’s ever happened because of Usu Company...

and I have been following each other on Instagram for the past few years. A fellow , she has been a customer, a supporter, and an encourager for almost since the beginning 5 years ago. And as a fan of her art and journey, I’ve had the privdge of watching her move through medical school and into this next phase of life that she’s approaching.

So, imagine my delight when she messaged me and said that she would be in Raleigh over the weekend and wanted to come to the workshop at Cloer! Of course we made room for her and her partner (he’s also Nigerian ! 🇳🇬) and this internet friendship became a reality.

If you’ve followed along here or on the email list for any amount of time, and we’ve happened to see you in person, I hope you understand just how genuinely I appreciate meeting you. And what your presence—even from afar and through a screen—has meant for me. It is a true joy and honor to meet you in person, and I hope I have a chance to do it more and more.

Thanks to and to everyone who came out to —can’t wait to see you soon! ❤️

Dispatches from home. 🌍 So far…

🐟 I’ve eaten roasted fish at/for almost every meal and don’t plan on stopping.

✈️ Had an unexpected pit stop at an airport an hour away from my destination because of weather 😵‍💫

📚Another book finished for the year thanks to the Read & Return option at ! It really is is one of the best airport amenities you can find.

🥭 Mango season is here!! I see them everywhere by the bucket and wheelbarrow full. This one was almost too heavy for my wrist to handle and is definitely made for sharing.

🪴Did a little roadside plant & pot shopping with mom. Most interesting finding: plastic pots are twice as expensive as the gorgeous handcrafted clay ones.

🌩️ Watched a storm roll in juuuust as a special delivery was being made…

👩🏾‍🦱👩🏾‍🦱 My sister! Thankfully she made it in safely. But her luggage was another story 🫣

👸🏾On Sunday, we celebrated the Queen on Mother’s Day. Mrs. Mary is the best.

🍹And of course we’ve been taking advantage of the city that is Abuja. This places changes so fast, and feels more and more like other big, international cities because of what’s available. Restaurants, cocktails bars, lounges, shopping and more are all available.

🪟And even with the city in front of me, some of my favorite parts of being here are things like wrought iron windows and the open breeze.

Every trip home feels different and this one is definitely following that trend. My favorite places to be are in the village and smaller towns, so even with all of the fun, I know the best parts are yet to come. Thanks for everyone who has followed along so far, and let me know what you want to see more of/questions in the comment and stories!

Fast friends and smiling faces. ❤️

This is the best part of making “community” a living, breathing thing. Community isn’t just a space or an idea or a buzz word—it’s people. It’s conversations and laughter, celebrating birthdays with strangers and finding commonalities. It’s history. It’s stories. It’s experiencing something new.

Thanks to for hosting another Candle Making workshop with me and to everyone who attended with open hearts and open minds.

Cheers to more community.
