A few weeks ago I came across a video of an art educator critiquing a massive scale paint pour video, trying to determine if it should be considered 'art' or is it just 'decor' and it filled me with rage. We made up the concept of art and any distinction between it and decor or craft is entirely arbitrary. Not to mention the classist implications, a sculpture is considered fine art but ceramics is a craft?
The comment section was filled with pretentious types trying to define 'art' and all it ended up being was them bending over backwards to gerrymander a definition whilst sh****ng on 'pinterest crafts'. So f**k it, there's no difference between art and craft. Skill, creativity, intention, these are all present throughout creating. If I made this exact piece above with oil paints would it magically be more 'artistic' than my stitched version?
Don't listen to any pretentious do**he nozzles who try and define art or tell you what you've made isn't art. Create recklessly and without abandon and in the direction that brings you joy.
