What’s the point of metal recoating, and when might your home’s metal roof need it?
Note: RETEX replaced the ridge cap, recoated the roof, and replaced this Stafford home’s gutters in May 2025.
Standing seam metal roofs, though more expensive upfront than architectural shingles, are more ecologically responsible as they contain recycled metals, have a long lifespan, and can be completely recycled when it’s eventually time to replace them. You may have to replace an architectural shingle roof 3-4 times within the same lifespan of a standing seam metal roof.
Recoating your metal roof provides a less-expensive option to replacing it, with the coating sealing any leaks, cracks, and seams that may cause a roof leak inside your home. It’s more environmentally friendly, too, as there’s less site debris, pollutants, and overall energy consumed than in a full tear-off and roof replacement. Plus, some roof coatings come with solar reflective properties, and you can change the appearance of your roof depending on the color you choose.
Regular cleaning and addressing minor issues promptly can extend the time between recoatings, which (if you have a good coating to start) should last you between 15-20 years.
