Tools of the trade - with my love of combining techniques, comes a bag full of useful tools. I often say that the punch and the hook fight for their spot in my hand. However, one of my many pairs of beloved scissors gives them a proper challenge on any given day. I love how I can sculpt both my punched and hooked loops, trimming them with a sharp pair of scissors into all sorts of shapes. Scissors help me cut out my proddy pieces and add detail to different standing wool techniques. Scissors are an essential tool when punching, a closed pair is the perfect tool for nudging loops just where I want them during the clean up phase of the project. I absolutely love scissors.

Proddy makes the most luscious rugs, so soft underfoot! I have admired many over the years, however proddy finds its way into my work more as an accent, rather than the main event. It makes the best edges for a pillow, so whimsical and fun. I love how it can transform a piece with just right 3D pop. I plan to make a full proddy rug someday soon, so my feet can feel what, to date, only my eyes have enjoyed.

Ah…I do love quillies. These delightful, yet simple coils of fabric make me smile. There are many standing wool techniques that I use in my work, but the quillie, by far, gets the most attention. There are so many ways for them to shine in stand alone projects and combined with other techniques. Sailing along, while coiling happy circles, sounds like a pleasant way to spend the day.

I am passionate about combining fiber art techniques in my work. I enjoy each technique individually, traditional rug hooking, punch needle rug hooking, proddy, and standing wool. Each has a beautiful history and the techniques create marvelous work. However, I find it hard to keep them separate in my creative life. I see a design and an area just calls out for a quillie, or demands the pop of proddy. Certain elements require detailed shading and the fine touch of a hook, precisely pulling loops. I love the ease of the punch needle and working with yarn is top on my list, so it is a rare project that a punch is not employed. Combining isn’t forced, it just happens.

Hello - Rebecca here from taking over the account today! I am counting the days until I am on the in August. I want to take this time today to introduce myself and share about what my students will be learning on our nautical adventure.
Let’s start with a bit about me and my land locked studio and dye kitchen in Northern Colorado. With teenagers and terriers at home, this set up allows me to wear many hats throughout the day. The studio has its own entrance, and I enjoy having students and customers come and visit me while I juggle ferrying kids to school, writing, dyeing wool, working on projects, snuggling dogs, and chatting with my husband, who also works from home.
