As I was leaving Lentini Farms Rutherford market today, with my Jersey tomatoes and corn and the two bouquets I impulsively purchased, a woman told me “You look so joyous to have those flowers.” Joy has been in short supply lately—too many complicated commitments, friends struggling with serious illness, and the unrelenting news stories of hatred and violence. So it was nice to find a little joy in something beautiful, and to share that joy with others—I had actually been thinking of the friend one of the bouquets was meant for. It’s a good reminder to buy the flowers, get the coffee, take time to catch up with someone over lunch—especially when things seem overwhelming. Because it’s those little moments of beauty and connection that keep us all going. I hope you find yours today.

Older homes, even the seemingly ordinary ones, can hide great beauty. This door is made of American chestnut, with a beautiful grain that was hidden for decades under layers of dark stain and heavy varnish. A blight virtually wiped out these trees in the 1900s, so these doors would be impossible to replicate today. With some expert TLC from Joe Kelly Interiors these doors will come to life, bringing depth and history to the spaces I’ve designed.

As a little girl, I spent hours at the library, reading The Borrowers, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and every Nancy Drew I could find. I still read every night, even if it’s only a few pages. My mother loved every minute of the time she worked at our local library. So I was delighted to support at the annual Gala of the Rutherford Public Library Foundation. There’s no better place to learn, connect, or escape than your local library! And it’s always fun to dress up, dance with friends (especially from the ), and make some new ones!

I’m delighted to be back in the classroom, teaching a graduate Interior Design Practice class at the New York School of Interior Design. The faculty, staff, and students have all been very welcoming, and I’m looking forward to a great semester. This class isn’t as creative as a studio, but it’s an important review of the knowledge you need to make sure your designs are implemented, and that your business runs smoothly.

Some of the most meaningful holiday decorations are handed down over generations. My great uncle built the stable we use to hold my parents’ now-vintage nativity set. It’s sitting on a record cabinet that I honestly wouldn’t purchase new, but which is very special since my father made it with his father. All of these items traveled the world with us when I was little. Some of the figurines are a little chipped, and a couple aren’t sized correctly, but they bring back good memories! I pair it with a tree filled with sentimental ornaments, saving the “designer” tree for our formal living room. What are some memorable pieces in your holiday decor?
