I'm happy to report that I just finished using up all of the eggs I waterglassed in 2025! 🀩πŸ₯šπŸ€ As I've finished each jar, I clean, sanitize, and refill with fresh eggs, as they become available. This is my 3rd year waterglassing, and I absolutely love this project!! The eggs are great for baking or scrambling, and taste just like fresh eggs. I did have the odd egg that cracked or spoiled, but that will happen even with store-bought eggs, so I don't worry about it, and just make sure to crack each egg individually into a separate bowl before adding to the main mixing bowl. Thank you SO much to all the hardworking chicken ladies and their equally hardworking chicken tenders! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜πŸ‘

I baked a double batch of pumpkin bread yesterday! πŸ˜‹ Having home-baked goods readily available in my freezer is so valuable!! Especially yummy treats like this! It's saved me on many occasions already, especially on days when I'm tired or grouchy, and hungry, and just not in the mood to bake. It's a valuable act of self-care to plan ahead for yourself, and also helps save money instead of splurging on treats from the store if you're having a craving. Especially since I've started using so many home-made ingredients, the packaged stuff doesn't hit the same. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Plus, the daycare kids and my own son gobble the pumpkin bread down so fast!! I love that this treat is so popular, especially since it's packed with fiber and whole wheat. πŸ™β€οΈ With the hot summer weather, I'm having to bake either 1st thing in the morning or later in the evening.

I'm making the switch to aluminum-free baking powder, made here in the US! The key in any kind of lifestyle or mindset shift is small, manageable changes, added up over time. πŸ™ It's great to have long-term goals, but unless they're broken up into bite-sized pieces, it's easy to just loose all momentum and fall back into familiar territory. I've been slowly making such small changes over time, which I've been very happy with so far! I just try to space out new projects so I'm not trying to climb too many learning curves all at once. Switching from nonstick to cast iron and aluminum, from plastic cutting boards to wood, buying grains directly from the farmer, and so much more, has been incredibly rewarding so far! My Facebook feed has been filled with articles lately about the Ridgland beagles, and it's a reminder that even though not all of us are able to be on the front lines of social justice, the small changes in our own homes do indeed make an impact. Buy local, support local farmers, and do try to research cruelty-free alternatives when possible. πŸ€ŽπŸΆπŸ•πŸΎ

I stayed up to do an overnight peach canning session! πŸ§‘πŸ‘πŸ«™πŸ§‘ It's the only way to can during the hot summer weather without heating up the apartment too much. There are still a lot of details that I'm finessing, and troubleshooting, and learning, but it's such a valuable learning experience, and a useful life skill!

More farm-fresh eggs! Yay!! Every time I open a carton of these eggs I am amazed by the beautiful variety of colors! And yes, some eggs have feathers and p**p, but it's okay! It's nothing a little soap and water can't fix, and it's a sign you're getting real eggs from chickens living happy lives outdoors!

It's been a minute, but I made prokes and beef stew yesterday! Red tones don't show up well on my phone camera, but everything looked great in person and tasted incredible! I've been on the search for decent beef for years, and what's in many of the stores these days just doesn't cut it, and what you can find online gets expensive with shipping and dry ice. Silvas All Natural Beef in Herald, CA is a family-owned ranch that sells beef shares. If you get together with another family, you can split a quarter steer, and serve your family meat you feel good about! ❀️πŸ₯©πŸ– I used the home-made beef broth in the beef stew, and rendered tallow to sear the meat! None of this is going to waste!! πŸ™

I performed a 2nd round of boiling today for the beef bones (12 hours in total using fresh water, after the original 18 hours for the 1st batch). This yielded a lighter broth, but still containing lots of nutrients. You can tell the bones are spent when they have begun to bleach and are able to be broken by hand. This liquid can be used to flavor rice. I'm trying to expand my palate, discover more nutritious dishes, and explore ways to use ingredients efficiently!

Bone broth is supposed to be great for inflammation, tendon repair, IBS, and much more. Making it at home takes time, but not much effort. You don't have to mess with it, just keep an eye on the liquid levels and let it simmer all day. There are many recipes, and it takes time to figure out how to make new dishes taste good. I'm just grateful to work on learning a new skill!
