Today is National Burger Day! So, I decided to get a burger somewhere I haven’t been to before.

While browsing options, I saw that Pop's Place Bar And Grill has a morel mushroom appetizer. ‘Nuff said.

Upon entering, I walked through the entire place to sit at the bar since I was dining alone. Nobody greeted me for over four minutes despite making eye contact and being in close proximity. And I was even being forced to wear pants and “man” clothes since I was working today.

Eventually, a server that was not responsible for me, at least, said hi. A couple minutes later, a random employee asked if I had been helped yet and finally got me a menu.

The morel mushrooms were breaded rather than battered. I prefer my fried morels lightly floured but they were decidedly better than an overpowering batter. I was still able to taste the mushrooms beneath the well seasoned breading. An 8 out of 10.

My burger was a patty melt with a side of onion straws. The onion straws were pretty good, too. A 7 out of 10. The patty melt was a greasy mess (a plus in my book). The grilled onions on it were pretty much caramelized and were the best part of the burger. They were the same extremely thin strands of onion as the onion straws which allowed them to be caramelized so quickly. The toast and cheese were good. The burger patty itself was cooked perfectly as I requested it. Medium rare. However, if any salt or pepper made it onto the patty, I sure didn’t notice. Overall I’d give it a 6 out of 10 (only getting that much for the excellent onions). The meat should have been the star but fell flat.

I may return someday to see if the poor service was a fluke but I don’t think I will be getting another burger.

Today, I tried Roman's Street Tacos with my crew for lunch. Being a lunch break, I was forced by my employer to wear pants. However, I met the owner a couple weeks ago when dining without pants so I know it is a friendly and welcoming establishment that I can wear whatever I want.

Let me start by saying this. They don’t serve fajitas, nachos, or put peas and carrots in their rice. This place is authentic Mexican and a great addition to our growing food scene.

I ordered three tacos. Tripa, lengua, and cabeza. I added one tamal and sides of rice and beans. My crew got carne asada and pastor tacos and tamales. The tacos were served with typical onions and cilantro but also had the bonus of grilled onions to add. A grilled jalapeño and some sliced cucumber were also included.

The grilled onions were a great addition that elevated the tacos beyond the usual. The lengua was so beefy. Like pot roast. And the cabeza was rich in collagen making it, literally, lip smacking good. The tripa though! That glorious tripa was the best I have ever had. I ALWAYS wind up with a chewy piece stuck in my teeth but not this time. It was perfectly cooked to a crispy goodness I have never experienced. If you have never tried tripa, THIS is where you should take the plunge.

Their tamales are great. One of my pet peeves is getting a huge tamal only to have a sliver thin layer of meat and a ton of masa. Not here though. The tamales had “two fingers” of meat and just enough masa to hold it all together. It was the perfect meat to masa ratio. Full flavors of both working together like Ginger Rodgers and Fred Astaire.

The beans were good. Not spectacular. But absolutely nothing wrong with them. You may even like them better than I do. This is all subjective anyway. But OMG! The rice was outta sight! The owner gave me my sides and said with pride that the rice was perfect. One has to take such remarks with a grain of salt usually. But she was absolutely right! The texture was perfect. The flavor was extraordinary. Maybe the rice was cooked in chicken stock. I’m not sure but it was the best Mexican rice I have ever had!

I didn’t even mention the salsa. The green salsa was good. The red salsa was the best ever. (LOL. I keep saying that but it’s true). It had a smokiness to it that truly set it apart from any I have had before. It wasn’t blazing hot like habanero that would overpower one’s food and just be hot. I’m guessing it was made with guajillo chiles because of their medium heat and smoky flavor. One of my crew disagreed and thought it was smoked ancho. Regardless, it was a salsa masterpiece.

I haven’t tried everything they have and I already have three things that they offer the best of. One of my crew said that he will never be able to eat tacos anywhere else again. I wish I had eaten here sooner!

I took my son to EMI and decided to try something new this time. As always (EMI being open after I’m home from work) I was dining without pants and was accepted and welcomed.

I got the lasagna which is finished off in the wood fired oven. EMI makes the pasta and sauce from scratch and it was better than I imagined it would be. EMI uses the best ingredients and I should have known this lasagna was going to be the best I have ever eaten. It was better than my mom’s, better than my own, better than my wife’s, and waaay better than Olive Garden.

We got our usual favorite Tuscan pork and beans appetizer. I also got a cannoli to go (also outstanding). The entire dining experience was perfect. Taylor pre-bussed keeping our table clear and manageable and had towels at the ready just seconds after I spilled my water. The service was as great as the food.

The only problem is now I have a tougher decision about what to eat the next time we go.

Tonight, I dined without pants at RC's Lunch Car. Just before my son and I were going to get some food, I saw RC’s post of their special. It’s Duck Bulgogi Tacos! They were served with a side of kimchi and a miso/ginger side salad. This is only being served after 5PM now through Sunday or until sold out. They were unbelievable!! Click on the RC’s link to read the details of everything that went into this amazing dish. It was the best special they’ve had in a while. You gotta try it. The duck breast was cooked a perfect medium rare and was marinated so well. The pear slaw complimented it perfectly and the sauce was outstanding.

The staff is always friendly and welcoming and I always feel comfortable dressing how I please here.

The only downside was minor. My cold beer wasn’t very cold. First time I’ve gotten one here so I don’t know if it was a cooler issue or it just hadn’t been in cooler long enough. I’ll just have to find out later with another one 😁.

Today’s location is only open when I’m at lunch. So, I am being forced to wear pants by my employer. That being said, this post is all about the food.

I went to Chaddy’s Cafe in the Buchanan County Courthouse in Saint Joseph, MO. Thursday’s special is a tenderloin sandwich with your choice of homemade kettle chips or fries. $13.00

The good thing worth mentioning is that it was a real piece of meat and not a fritter. I wasn’t dining alone and all of our tenderloins looked very uniform and had that “out of a box” breading appearance. The speed in which we got them suggested that as well. It wasn’t juicy. The only moistness being from some residual oil in the breading and the ketchup and mayonnaise that was needed for more flavor. The taste was just meat and breadcrumbs. No seasoning at all. Just. Bland. The buttered bun seemed to elude most of the butter like the Duke’s running from Roscoe P. Coltrane.

For an establishment to use the motto “Premium Products-Chef Driven” on its menu and not living up to either is disappointing. This experience does not make me want to return to try anything else.

Last night, I dined without pants at D&G Pub & Grub Brew Haus. I had the Jim Morrison which is a breaded pork tenderloin on a brioche bun. It comes with a side (I got seasoned fries), your choice of cheese (I chose Swiss), and garden upon request. The price is $15. Note: it comes with more fries. I had eaten quite a few before I took the picture.

Let’s get down to it. The tenderloin. In my opinion, it is the perfect ratio of meat to breading. It’s not pounded so thin that you can’t taste the meat or so thick you feel like it’s a pork chop sandwich. And it’s very important to note that the breading is VERY crispy throughout the sandwich. Even in the center. It wasn’t oily from the fryer at all. The brioche bun is “buttered” and toasted for that little bit of extra texture and flavor. It’s consistently good each time I’ve had it.

I can absolutely argue that this is the best tenderloin in Saint Joseph. Combined with great choices in sides, you can’t go wrong with it. The fries are always crispy and there are many good options to choose from.

D&G, and the adjacent Cafe Acoustic Concert Hall are friendly and welcoming establishments to the LGBT+ community. I always feel comfortable dressing as I please. My profile picture for this page was taken there last year.

Not the prettiest plate but it’s all good. Braised oxtails and a lamb chop. The potatoes and morels were braised with the meat. The creamy morel sauce was the best part IMO.

I went down to Los Arcos Street Tacos to get the family some dinner to go because they had some off-menu specials today. My son got the Birria Tacos (off-menu but an every day item, I think). I’ve eaten them before and they are exceptional. My wife got Camerones a la Mexicana. I didn’t try them but my wife liked it and it was a departure from what she would normally get. The main reason I wanted to go was because they had Chicharrón en Salsa Verde, one of my favorites. It was, hands down, the best I’ve ever had! The salsa had an uncommon depth of flavor to it. And it was really thick which made it great to pile into tortillas without the salsa running out the ends. I must say that their refried beans are really freakin’ awesome, too.

I wasn’t wearing pants when I got the food and I’ve eaten there a number of times without pants (I was actually the first customer on opening day). I’ve never had any problems or been made to feel uncomfortable at this restaurant because of my clothes.

So, this is a GoChew burger. It came with a side of “saucy fries” and I got grilled kimchi added on top of the fries. The burger is a smash burger with American cheese, their amazing sauce, and pickled onions. The fries have three different sauces on them and green onions. I can’t name nor explain all the sauces they use. But trust me. They are awesome! I’ve eaten kimchi before but didn’t even know grilled kimchi was a thing until they offered to grill it. Holy crap! Grilling kimchi is the bees knees.

I WAS dining without pants tonight. This was at their food truck. But I know I would feel comfortable at their Raytown restaurant, as well.

I wasn’t planning much for lunch until I saw Mido's Halal Mediterranean Grill Food Truck had Beef Shawarma and Dolmas today. I’ve had shawarma before but not beef. So, I hightailed it down to try both.

The Shawarma was available as a wrap or “dinner” plate. It was magnificently seasoned. I could have eaten it just as it was but then he also put an amazing sauce on it. It was over-the-top good! The shawarma spice is still lingering on my palette as I write this.

The Dolmas were the best I’ve ever had. I’ve only had them with plain white rice inside. These were filled with his spiced rice!

As I was on my lunch break, I was forced to wear pants. However, I have been to Mido’s many times in my preferred clothing and was never treated disrespectfully.
