Modern Studio Furniture Made in Upstate New York We are Jon & Deana Ketchum, the husband/wife duo behind New Collar Goods, located in Salem, NY.

We established our studio in 2015 with the purpose of designing and building the kind of furniture we wanted in our home. We strive to build intentional pieces that will last a lifetime.

A few shaker inspired nightstands/hall tables with turned rosewood pulls for a lovely local client.

A modern aesthetic often drove us while living in Denver. Since returning east, we’re really falling into the simple proportions and utilitarian design of shaker furniture. We still like a little weird in our lives but now we feel like we have a better understanding of why these forms feel timeless in nearly any setting.

Earlier this year we collaborated with Phil Morley to help build two very beautiful walnut dining tables for his clients.

Together, we worked through fixturing, joinery and CNC strategy to bring his designs to life. This table was particularly challenging as it had a scalloped/coopered leg set that tipped towards the center of the table at 5 degrees. It was also built to assemble on site and had some creative flat pack joinery to support the long apron and top rails that held the top. It was a really rewarding process to work along side such a talented and knowledgeable fine furniture maker.

As an aside, I think it’s important for know that when you support small/dedicated craftspeople, you’re not just hiring them, you’re hiring a collective community of people that regularly share ideas, concepts and knowledge to better your product. We’re proud to call Phil a friend (beyond the shop) and these relationships, developed behind the scenes, are likely the richest part of this whole social media thing.

More veneer and bent lamination work with these pieces. Some nice touch to open drawers and a bit of hidden storage behind the curve for cords/wires.

Custom Wenge and steel table base for a large stone top. Complete with doggie port-hole (see last image).

Another project that brought us into new territory. This piece had a bent laminated plywood “skin” with vertical grain Wenge veneer. Once bent, the plywood was cut to size at then carefully CNC’d to recieve the 14” steel tube that cuts through the base. The welded substructure was built for mass (as the top cantilevers the base) and weighed roughly 800 when assembled.

A custom console in edge grain maple (think woodworker’s bench) and 1”steel legs for JAM

Each shelf features a 1”x1” grid routed into the faces that wraps the entire piece. A bit of a datum for the 5”, 3” and 2” shelves.

Though simple in form, this was a really challenging piece to engineer and build. There were many fixtures made and some clever connections developed to float these shelves on their single post legs.

As an aside, this one weighs close to 500lbs 💪.

We recently shipped a host of custom items for a JAM project and we’re really proud of all of them.

Featured is a solid rosewood mirror designed and produced by us to hang over a mantle.

During the time of design I was reading a Lost Art Press book about “peasant furniture” and it struck a chord. This type of furniture incorporated carved geometric symbols (lines, arcs and circles) in various combinations to elicit “spells” of protection for an individual or family. This mirror incorporates stacked triangles which is the symbol for a “saw,” indicating fire or the heat that sustains life. Oddly appropriate for this mantle mirror.

We just added a small run of one-of-a-kind butcher blocks. These are made from offcuts of walnut—salvaged from the shop floor and reimagined into something beautiful! Each board is unique in tone and grain, with clean lines, soft edges, and scooped out handles to make them easy to pick up and carry.

These are great hats for home and shop use. They’re 100% cotton and are super easy to throw in the wash. It’s our go-to hat around here.
