About Jennifer Van Galder //

Owner and founder of Van Galder Design for Living, Jennifer Van Galder, was raised in an environment that elevated her senses and inspired her to seek creativity in the sights, sounds and smells of everyday life.

Her mother was also a talented designer, whose many travels and love for exploration encouraged much of her work. Jennifer now uses this same motivation, extracting the emotion and spirit from fashion, travel, food, and greatness of day-to-day experiences to bring her designs to life. Her professional career in interior design started in 1988 where she learned the ins and outs of the industry at Kreiss on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. Encouraged by her own creative eye and entrepreneurial nature, Jennifer opened Maudlin in Corona del Mar in 1991 and a second location in La Jolla in 1992. She operated this full-service, boutique design firm alongside her mother and sister for over 12 years. Connecting her family name to her work, she went on to launch Van Galder Design for Living in 2013. Jennifer’s design can be described as classic with a clever and fresh twist. She uses unexpected combinations of textures, colors, and metals to create a warm and inviting balance of design elements. Her fabric and pattern choices allow her work stay current, yet one-of-a-kind. Most importantly, she seeks to elevate living experiences by designing homes with her clients’ lifestyles, personalities, and needs in mind. Each client is involved in the creative process from start to finish, crafting spaces they will continue to love once the project is finished. Jennifer devotes much of her time to her storefront, where she houses exclusive materials and samples from vendors, hosts trunk shows and highlights fabric collections. Always seeking the unique, she scourges trade shows to find intriguing objects to showcase and sell. However, her favorite part about the business is connecting with clients, striking up a conversation and sharing the story behind her unconventional pieces.

A kitchen and bar designed around harmony and handcrafted detail.

The warmth of copper became our anchor — reflected in lighting, hardware, and even the custom-colored BlueStar range, which we tailored to coordinate perfectly with our metallic accents. Swipe to slide 9 to see these beautiful details up close! (It’s worth it)

Soapstone counters bring depth and texture, while soft blue-gray cabinetry and natural woven shades layer in calm coastal tones. The curved bar soffit adds architectural softness and balance, creating a seamless flow between the two spaces.

Together, they strike that delicate balance between timeless and modern — where every material feels collected, not constructed.

Introducing the crown jewel of our Rancho Santa Fe Ranch project: a custom copper oven by La Cornue.

This oven had a long trip over seas to get to us! It was imported straight from France to the heart of the home: the kitchen!

Head on over to our highlight above RSF Ranch to see more. ✨

It’s one thing to see concepts in computerized drawing form and another in reality. For this natural organic home in the desert these soft textured tones really create a cool space. The VGD custom funky iron chandelier compliments the wall tile on the fireplace. Once you sit on the generous down filled sofa-you never want to leave!!

Our client brought in a container of wood slabs from Bali for us to select from for this custom table. We had to sort through huge piles of wood in a hot warehouse to find the perfect canidate! It is cut in half so they can easily access their banquette seating!!

Our ideal movie night situation. 🍿

Having a cozy space for a family to enjoy television together is important for our clients. We utilized the high performance indoor/outdoor fabric from in a chenille weave for our large custom sectional to achieve that end.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Remodeling the fireplace with a clean stone surround and hearth grounds the television above it. Reworking this room to capture both the views to the garden and television simultaneously were a big win for us with this space.

Timeless elegance... with a twist.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our challenge was to create an old world bar inside a classic Hampton-style Cape Cod home with a pewter countertop, tin ceiling tile, and antique glass backsplash.

We sourced the lIght fixtures from as well as the custom brass bar stools with leather to repeat the brass tone. The surprise/speakeasy hidden door opens to a spiral staircase that leads to a subterranean wine cellar.
