I was fortunate to go on a curator-led tour of the Cindy Sherman exhibition at SF MOMA. This photographer figured out very early how she wanted to present her work and found a gallery to exhibit it, struck a nerve with the public and has been touching that nerve and our souls ever since. Seeing her work in this retrospective is electrifying and provides a thoroughly satisfying viewing experience. Quite amazing how someone can take on the very core of such a variety of personalities and then photograph herself so brilliantly as well. Well worth a visit.

I saw the Jean Paul Gaulthier exhibit at the de Young Museum last Friday. It was pretty astounding! The details and craftsmanship were amazing . Some of the mannequins ‘talk’ or 'sing' as you stand in front of them. Quite wild and a lot of fun ! It was packed and many seem stunned. It is an exhibit that will remain controversial no matter where it shows.

SFMOMA is now exhibiting the extraordinary works of Mark Bradford. Seeing a whole group of them provides a visceral power through paint that is electric! His works are large and utterly engaging-grabbing you from the moment you enter, and holding you until the moment you leave. And, even thereafter as they sit in your memory. His use of mixed media is like no other. Bradford is an incredible and amazing talent. Run-don’t walk!

I saw the new Stephen deStaebler exhibition at the De Young Museum tonight. It is ethereal - not a common adjective to use with clay sculptures. Powerful and evokes a visceral reaction. Make a visit.

I saw the Francesca Woodman photography exhibit at SFMOMA today. She was an extraordinary photographer who lived only 22 years and yet her body of work, most of which has not been shown before, is mature, strong, and quite compelling. Woodman, the daughter of two artists, Betty, a well-known ceramicist, and George Woodman, a painter, has a unique viewpoint and invites the viewer to participate. It is a wonderful show and definitely worth a visit.

Kelley and I saw the Maharaja exhibit at the Asian Art Museum. The bejeweled objects were stunning and we were awed by the beauty of the craftsmanship. The gold chair and the silver coach were particularly amazing as were the luminescent character of the antique fabrics and clothing. They glowed! Worth a trip to view for yourself.
