I’m picking back up on a series of maps I started last spring that use land cover data as a way to color a map. They walk that fine line of realism that shows up in much of my work. Why not just use a satellite image? To me it’s control, I can maintain certain aesthetic qualities that are both nice to look at and also help the reader understand the landscape by limiting the amount of unnecessary visual noise present. I’m not trying to trick the reader into believing this is a real thing, it’s not, it’s a visualization based in data. But when certain elements contain that realism, there is a connection that takes place that I find important to understanding what’s going on.

On a recent visit to Zion National Park in Utah I hiked The Narrows, a 6-hour hike through the deep canyons carved by the Virgin River.

Using 1-meter elevation data and a 1980 topographic map from the USGS, I created this historic elevation that captures a truly wild landscape. Find the Zion National Park: Temple of Sinawava map in my shop.
