An unhealthy reliance on external validation looks like not being able to confront people, not being able to disagree, constantly changing your thoughts and beliefs because someone you value might disapprove, and ascribing your self-worth to the approval of others, especially those you love. This can potentially create anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, making it addictive to hear praise, acceptance, and acknowledgment.

Some ways to begin drawing back on seeking external validation are: learn to trust yourself, stop comparing yourself with others, be aware of your intentions and actions, practice compassion towards yourself, don’t measure your worth (for example) on the basis of social media attention.

Currently, I am hard at work with this theme: love vs. attachment

In theory, it is easy for me to grasp and visualize myself embracing true love - however, when it comes time to practice love, it is difficult. I believe with every cell of my being that the most difficult and challenging people are present in my life to force me to come face to face with my most ugliest and darkest emotions where love is absent and ‘hate’ dwells. It is here in the presence of irritation where I have the opportunity to practice and hopefully master love/compassion. If you are wondering - NOPE I have not succeeded… yet. When we choose to avoid people, we are stunting our growth. Trust me, I know lol.

I confused love with attachment my entire youth. I equated love to romance and romance only. How dare we constrict the true power of love to only certain individuals. This is not our fault, but let us now take responsibility - our parents didn’t know any better. And neither did their parents and their parents before them. Let’s break that cycle. 

I believe I am still small-minded when it comes to love, BUT, I am beginning to understand what love is in its purest form and one word I can use to describe love is COMPASSION.
