🔥 Wisdom Wednesday | Countertop Series: Part 2

Does your pan REALLY get hot enough to burn your quartz countertop?

Yes. Absolutely. And probably much hotter than you think.

Quartz countertops are incredibly durable, but there's an important distinction: quartz countertops aren't solid quartz. They're engineered surfaces made from minerals held together with polymer resins.

And the resin is the part that doesn't love heat.

🍳 A hot skillet can reach 300–500°F+
🔥 Cast iron can easily exceed 500°F
🥘 Cookware coming directly from the oven may be 350–500°F

Depending on the manufacturer, prolonged or sudden exposure to high heat can discolor, scorch, or damage the resin in a quartz surface. And unlike a little surface stain, heat damage may be permanent.

So does this mean quartz isn't a good countertop?

Not at all.

Quartz is one of my favorite countertop materials because it's durable, nonporous, low-maintenance, and available in an enormous range of designs. It just needs to be treated like the engineered material it is.

The solution is ridiculously simple:

Use a trivet. ❤️

Knowing how a material performs before you put it in your kitchen is part of choosing the right countertop—not just choosing the prettiest slab.

✨ A kitchen designed for real life.

This completed kitchen brings together a bright, open layout with plenty of storage, generous work surfaces, and a contrasting island that creates a natural gathering place at the center of the room.

One of my favorite things about kitchen design is creating a space that works with the way a homeowner actually lives. From cabinetry placement and storage to maintaining comfortable flow between the kitchen and dining area, every inch matters.

The soft gray perimeter cabinetry keeps the room feeling light and airy, while the deep blue island adds contrast and anchors the open space. Quartz countertops provide a durable, easy-to-maintain work surface with plenty of room for cooking, serving, and everyday life.

Every homeowner brings their own personality and selections to a project — and the finished space should ultimately feel like their home.

💎 Wisdom Wednesday | Countertop Series: Part 1

How hard is your countertop?

When choosing a countertop, looks are important—but understanding how a material will actually perform in your home matters just as much.

One way we compare natural and engineered surfaces is the Mohs Hardness Scale, which measures a mineral’s resistance to scratching.

✨ Quartzite | ~7–8
An extremely hard natural stone with excellent scratch resistance.

✨ Quartz | ~7
An engineered surface made with hard quartz minerals, offering excellent durability and low maintenance.

✨ Granite | ~6–7
A durable natural stone made up of several minerals, including quartz and feldspar.

✨ Marble | ~3–4
Beautiful and timeless, but considerably softer and more susceptible to scratching and etching.

✨ Soapstone | ~2.5–3
A softer natural stone that can scratch more easily—but develops a distinctive patina that many homeowners love.

So, does harder automatically mean better? Not necessarily.

The best countertop isn't simply the hardest one. How you cook, clean, entertain, and use your space should all factor into choosing the right surface.

That’s why material selection is about more than picking the prettiest slab. It’s about choosing the right material for the way you actually live.

✨ BEFORE & AFTER TUESDAY

Same kitchen. Completely different experience.

This kitchen went from dark, dated and visually heavy to bright, open and timeless.

By reworking the layout and simplifying the finishes, we were able to create a space that feels larger and much more intentional. Crisp white cabinetry, light countertops, a full-height backsplash and stainless appliances completely transformed the room, while the large island gives the kitchen a beautiful, functional centerpiece.

One of my favorite parts of kitchen design is seeing just how much potential can be hiding in an existing space. You don't always need more square footage — sometimes you just need to make better use of the square footage you already have.

✨ MEET THE DESIGNER MONDAY

You’ve met the designer — now let me show you a little more about where we can meet.

Luxe Interiors is located inside the S. Steele St. Corner Business Center in Downtown Sanford, giving my clients access to a comfortable, professional setting when we meet to discuss their kitchen or bath project.

In addition to my private design studio, the building offers shared spaces including a conference room, comfortable seating areas and a kitchen — giving us room to spread out plans, samples and selections when a project calls for a little more space.

My studio itself is where you’ll find cabinetry, countertop, tile, paint and finish samples to help you see and compare options in person.

It’s a different kind of kitchen & bath experience — personal, appointment-focused and designed around your project, rather than a traditional retail showroom.

✨ TOP TIER THURSDAY

What makes a kitchen feel luxurious?

It isn't always one expensive finish. More often, it's how all of the details work together.

In this kitchen, the oversized island becomes the centerpiece of the room — giving the homeowners a generous work surface, plenty of storage and seating for four.

The perimeter cabinetry keeps things soft and timeless, while the darker island creates contrast and gives the room some visual weight.

And then there are the details that elevate the whole design:

🖤 Natural stone countertops with incredible movement
🖤 Full-height stone backsplash
🖤 Statement range and modern chimney hood
🖤 Under-cabinet and recessed lighting
🖤 Glass-front cabinetry for a little visual interest
🖤 An island large enough to work, gather, eat and entertain

A high-end kitchen isn't just about choosing beautiful materials.

It's about making those materials work together to create a space that feels intentional.

That's the difference between picking finishes and designing a kitchen.

💡 WISDOM WEDNESDAY

The kitchen work triangle isn't a rule anymore.

For decades, kitchen design centered around the “work triangle” — positioning the sink, refrigerator and range so you could easily move between the three.

And while the triangle can still work beautifully, today's kitchens have changed.

We have larger kitchens, islands, multiple cooks, prep sinks, wall ovens, beverage centers, appliance garages and more specialized storage.

That's why I often think in terms of work zones instead.

🥕 Prep Zone — counter space, knives, cutting boards, trash
🍳 Cooking Zone — range, cookware, utensils, spices
🧼 Cleanup Zone — sink, dishwasher, dish storage
☕ Beverage Zone — coffee, glasses, beverages
🥫 Food Storage Zone — refrigerator and pantry

The goal isn't to force your kitchen into a perfect triangle.

It's to make sure the things you use together are located together — and that people can actually move through the kitchen without constantly getting in each other's way.

Because a beautiful kitchen is great.

A beautiful kitchen that works for the way you live? Even better.

✨ Same kitchen. A whole lot more potential.

This transformation wasn't about making the kitchen bigger — it was about making better use of the space that was already there.

One of the biggest changes? Removing the existing soffit. That allowed the new cabinetry to extend all the way to the ceiling, creating additional storage while also making the room feel taller and more open.

The new design also added:

🖤 More functional drawer storage
🖤 Additional cabinetry surrounding the refrigerator
🖤 Updated countertops, backsplash and hardware
🖤 A brighter, more cohesive look throughout

And because the kitchen didn't have quite enough room for a traditional permanent island, I recommended a movable island instead. It gives the homeowner extra prep space and storage when they need it, while keeping the flexibility to move it when they don't.

Good kitchen design isn't always about adding more.

Sometimes it's about figuring out how to get more out of what you already have.

One thing about opening a design studio — sometimes you have to be the designer, business owner AND furniture builder. 😂

A little time-lapse of me putting together one of the pieces for the studio.

I wanted this space to feel intentional from the moment you walk through the door, so watching all of the little pieces finally come together has been incredibly rewarding.

And yes... apparently assembling furniture is now part of the job description. 😂
