✨ WISDOM WEDNESDAY: Paint, Reface or Replace?

Thinking about updating your kitchen? Before assuming you need to spend a fortune on brand-new cabinets — or that refacing will automatically save you money — compare your options!

🎨 PAINT
If you love your current layout and your cabinets are in good condition, painting may be a great budget-friendly refresh. Just remember: cabinet painting requires the right products and proper prep. It's not the same as painting your walls!

🚪 REFACE
This is where homeowners can be surprised.

Refacing keeps your existing cabinet boxes but replaces the doors and drawer fronts and updates the exposed surfaces.

Refacing is NOT always the most cost-effective option.

Once you factor in new doors, drawer fronts, hardware and professional refinishing/refacing labor, the price may be closer to NEW cabinetry than you expected.

🏠 REPLACE
New cabinetry doesn't automatically mean expensive custom cabinetry!

🧠✨ WISDOM WEDNESDAY: Why do cabinet prices vary SO much?

One of the most common questions I hear is, “How much are cabinets per square foot?”

The answer? Cabinetry really doesn’t work that way.

Two kitchens can be the EXACT same size and have completely different cabinet prices. Why? Because you're not just paying for the amount of space you're filling.

You're choosing the construction, finish, door style, number of cabinets, drawers vs. doors, modifications, storage accessories and more.

Even something as simple as changing a base cabinet with doors to a 3-drawer base can change the price.

🎨 And COLOR matters too!

With my semi-custom cabinetry, I can even have your cabinets finished in ANY Sherwin-Williams color for a custom-color premium.

That means if you've fallen in love with the perfect Sherwin-Williams shade, you don't necessarily have to move into fully custom cabinetry to get it. ❤️

That's also why I don't believe in designing every kitchen the same way. If we need to bring a project closer to budget, there may be ways to adjust the design and selections without sacrificing the things that matter most to you.

🧠✨ WISDOM WEDNESDAY: What are your cabinets actually made of?

When shopping for cabinetry, you’ll hear terms like “all wood,” “plywood,” “solid wood,” and “MDF” — but they don’t all mean the same thing!

One of the biggest misconceptions? That solid lumber must be better than plywood. 🪵

For cabinet boxes, quality plywood is often the preferred material because its layered construction provides strength and dimensional stability. Solid lumber is beautiful and has an important place in cabinetry — especially for doors, face frames, drawer fronts and trim — but large solid-wood panels naturally expand and contract as humidity changes.

And MDF? Its smooth surface can make it useful for certain painted and decorative applications, but it has very different properties from plywood, particularly when it comes to moisture, screw holding and structural applications.

💡 The takeaway: Don’t just ask, “Are these cabinets wood?”

Ask WHAT material is being used, WHERE it’s being used, and WHY.

A quality cabinet is about using the right material for the right application.

✨ Wisdom Wednesday: Countertop Series — The Wrap-Up

Over the past few weeks, we’ve talked about hardness, heat resistance, quartz quality, and now stain resistance. So which countertop material is actually best?

The answer: it depends on how you live.

🔥 If heat resistance is a priority, natural stone may be the better fit. Granite and quartzite don’t contain the resins found in engineered quartz, making them better suited to handle higher temperatures.

🍷 If stain resistance and easy maintenance are priorities, engineered quartz may be the winner. Quartz is nonporous, doesn’t require sealing, and is highly resistant to everyday spills like coffee, w**e, oils, and sauces.

But that doesn’t make one surface good and the other bad.

Every countertop material has strengths — and every countertop material has characteristics you need to understand before choosing it.

That’s why I don’t believe in simply asking, “What countertop is best?”

I’d rather ask:

What countertop is best for YOU?

The right choice should work with the way you cook, clean, entertain, and actually use your kitchen — while still giving you the look you love.

💎 Wisdom Wednesday | Countertop Series: Part 3

Is all quartz created equal?

After the last two weeks, we know two important things: quartz countertops are engineered surfaces, and the resins and other materials used to manufacture them affect how they perform.

So... does the brand of quartz actually matter?

Yes — but maybe not for the reason you think.

Cambria, Silestone, MSI, Vicostone and TVS all manufacture quartz surfaces, but there can be differences in composition, manufacturing processes, certifications, warranties, design technology and quality control.

And here's where it gets interesting: a higher percentage of natural quartz doesn't automatically mean a better countertop. Newer technologies, such as Silestone's low-silica formulations, intentionally replace some crystalline silica with alternative minerals and recycled materials.

So when you're comparing quartz, don't just ask:

“Which color do I like?”

Also ask:

✨ Who manufactured it?
✨ How is it made?
✨ What certifications does it carry?
✨ What warranty comes with it?
✨ How will it perform in my kitchen?

Two slabs can look remarkably similar hanging on a showroom wall while being very different products behind the pretty veining.

That's where having someone help you understand what you're actually buying matters.

🔥 Wisdom Wednesday | Countertop Series: Part 2

Does your pan REALLY get hot enough to burn your quartz countertop?

Yes. Absolutely. And probably much hotter than you think.

Quartz countertops are incredibly durable, but there's an important distinction: quartz countertops aren't solid quartz. They're engineered surfaces made from minerals held together with polymer resins.

And the resin is the part that doesn't love heat.

🍳 A hot skillet can reach 300–500°F+
🔥 Cast iron can easily exceed 500°F
🥘 Cookware coming directly from the oven may be 350–500°F

Depending on the manufacturer, prolonged or sudden exposure to high heat can discolor, scorch, or damage the resin in a quartz surface. And unlike a little surface stain, heat damage may be permanent.

So does this mean quartz isn't a good countertop?

Not at all.

Quartz is one of my favorite countertop materials because it's durable, nonporous, low-maintenance, and available in an enormous range of designs. It just needs to be treated like the engineered material it is.

The solution is ridiculously simple:

Use a trivet. ❤️

Knowing how a material performs before you put it in your kitchen is part of choosing the right countertop—not just choosing the prettiest slab.

This completed kitchen brings together a bright, open layout with plenty of storage, generous work surfaces, and a contrasting island that creates a natural gathering place at the center of the room.

One of my favorite things about kitchen design is creating a space that works with the way a homeowner actually lives. From cabinetry placement and storage to maintaining comfortable flow between the kitchen and dining area, every inch matters.

The soft gray perimeter cabinetry keeps the room feeling light and airy, while the deep blue island adds contrast and anchors the open space. Quartz countertops provide a durable, easy-to-maintain work surface with plenty of room for cooking, serving, and everyday life.
