Most showrooms are very good at presenting product, but aren’t intentional about how they make designers feel in the process.

And that’s often where the opportunity is.

Because strong relationships with designers aren’t built on a single interaction. They’re built over time through consistency, clarity and how well your team supports them when things aren’t perfect.

The small moments matter:
How quickly issues are handled
How clearly expectations are set
How easy you are to work with under pressure

That’s what designers remember, and that’s what determines who they come back to – and who they quietly stop using.

This is the psychological layer I focus on when I work with brands and sales teams.

If you’re looking to strengthen how your team connects with designers, I speak on this topic for showrooms, brands and industry events. DM me to learn more, or you can visit my website (link in bio).

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand and manage your own emotions while also understanding and responding effectively to the emotions of others.

And in a profession built on relationships, it's one of the most valuable skills you can develop.

Think about it:
• It helps you navigate difficult client conversations without becoming defensive.
• It helps you uncover what clients really want, even when they're struggling to articulate it.
• It helps you manage conflict before it escalates into bigger problems.
• It helps you motivate, lead and communicate more effectively with your team.
• It helps you set boundaries while maintaining strong relationships.
• It helps you stay calm and solution-focused when projects become stressful.

The reality is that interior design isn't just about creating beautiful spaces. It's about managing expectations, navigating emotions, building trust and guiding people through a deeply personal process.

That's why emotional intelligence isn't a "soft skill." It's a business skill.

I'm passionate about helping designers understand the psychology behind client relationships, communication, leadership and business success. Because when you strengthen your emotional intelligence, you don't just become a better designer — you become a better business owner, leader and partner to your clients.

What if the biggest factor affecting your design business isn't your portfolio, pricing or process?

I recently joined Laurie Laizure, founder of The Interior Design Community, for a conversation about psychology for smarter design firms.

We explored why emotional intelligence is one of the most overlooked skills in the design industry and how it influences everything from leadership and communication to decision-making, client expectations and business growth.

Drawing from my degree in psychology and more than 25 years of running a successful design firm, I shared the strategies I've used to better understand client behavior, create stronger boundaries and build a more sustainable business.

If you've ever wondered why some projects feel effortless while others drain your time and energy, this conversation may offer a different perspective.

What thoughts run through your mind when you talk about money with a client?

For many designers, there are quiet “money scripts” playing in the background – beliefs shaped by childhood experiences, family conversations and early messages about what feels fair, safe, uncomfortable or “too much.”

These patterns can have a powerful impact on how you price your services, hold boundaries and show up with confidence in business conversations. When you begin to recognize them, you gain more clarity and more control over the decisions you’re making every day.

Confidence with money isn’t just about knowing your numbers: it’s about understanding the psychology behind how you relate to them.

The spaces we live, work and gather in have a profound impact on how we feel. They can calm our nervous system, reduce stress, improve focus, encourage connection and even influence our sense of safety and belonging.

That's why great design is about so much more than aesthetics.

Every color, texture, layout choice and lighting decision creates an emotional response. Some spaces leave us feeling energized and inspired. Others help us feel grounded, comfortable and at ease.

As both an interior designer and The Design Biz Therapist, I'm fascinated by the intersection of psychology and design. Understanding how people think, feel and respond to their environment allows us to create spaces that don't just look beautiful — they support wellbeing, relationships and everyday life.

The best interiors don't simply decorate a room.
They transform how we experience it.

How has a space ever changed the way you felt?

You’re not just being evaluated on your product.
You’re being evaluated on how risky you feel.

Designers aren’t buying for themselves – they’re protecting their reputation with every recommendation they make.

So the real question isn’t: Is this beautiful or well-made?

It’s: Will this make me look good… or create problems?

The brands that win understand this. They reduce friction. They communicate clearly.
They make designers feel confident bringing them into a project.

That’s what turns a one-time spec into a go-to relationship.

If you want your team to better understand how designers actually make decisions, I speak with brands, showrooms and sales teams on this exact topic.

I’m honored to be returning as a speaker at Vanguard Furniture’s Design Visionary Retreat this year – my third time partnering with their team for this special event.

During the two-day program, I’ll contribute psychology-based insights for Vanguard’s sales leaders and top designers, exploring topics like problem-solving, client dynamics, strengthening sales conversations and thinking ahead about where the interior design business is heading. These are the kinds of discussions that help brands better support their designer clients while also building stronger relationships and performance.

I love collaborating with home furnishings industry brands and industry events to create thoughtful, engaging programming that rewards top clients, energizes teams and delivers practical ideas professionals can put into action right away.

If your brand is looking to strengthen relationships with designers or help your sales team collaborate more effectively with them, I’d love to connect.

Do you love design, but still feel like running your business is harder than you expected?

The hard part usually isn’t the design.

It’s the clients who hesitate, push back or change direction. It’s managing expectations, emotions and decisions that feel high-stakes to them. It’s trying to balance creativity with running a business at the same time.

I just shared a new blog on this – why loving design doesn’t automatically make the business side feel easy, and how the psychology of design plays a much bigger role than most people realize.

In the post, I break down:
• What’s actually behind common client behaviors
• How to respond in a way that keeps projects moving forward
• Why this work feels heavier than expected
• Practical shifts you can make immediately to feel more in control

After 25+ years in this industry, I can tell you that this is the part most designers are never taught, but end up navigating every single day.

If you’ve ever thought, “Why does this feel so hard?” this will likely resonate.

Emotional intelligence, or EQ, is the ability to understand your own emotions and regulate them while also recognizing how the people around you are feeling. It is paying attention to body language, tone, subtle energy shifts in the room, and the meaning behind what clients say and do.

At its core, EQ is simple. It is awareness of yourself and awareness of others.

Why Emotional Intelligence Elevates Your Design Business:

1️⃣ Better communication
When you understand your own emotional triggers and your client’s emotional state, conversations become clearer and smoother. You respond instead of react.

2️⃣ Stronger leadership on projects
You can read the room, sense hesitation, notice stress, and guide clients through decision-making with confidence and ease.

3️⃣ Early conflict diffusion
Most conflicts show signs long before they become “big things.” High EQ helps you catch the early cues and redirect the conversation before tension builds.

4️⃣ More efficient, aligned projects
Clients feel safe when they feel understood. That trust speeds up decisions, reduces friction, and leads to better outcomes.

5️⃣ A higher-level client experience
Elevated emotional intelligence helps you create a journey where clients feel supported, guided, and valued from start to finish.

EQ is one of the most powerful tools a designer can develop. When you strengthen your emotional intelligence, you strengthen your business, your client relationships, and our industry as a whole.
