St. Patrick’s Day has recently become one of my favorite celebrations. If you’ve ever visited Savannah during this week, then you may understand why! Not only do we have the opportunity to hosts our friends who visit during this time, but the city of Savannah puts on a fabulous show. The streets downtown are blocked off and hundreds of thousands of people take to foot.
The Hostess City of the South accommodates between 200,000-500,000 guests (depending on the day of the event) each year, and it strives to do so gracefully. Downtown business close, and restaurants and pubs open their doors (and windows!) to accommodate everyone’s need for food and drink.
The parade begins around 10AM and last for several hours as participants come from all over the US. It is truly a sight to behold! I love that you can step away from the crowded parade route for a bit and wander other streets filled with vendor carts and open pub windows ready to supply you with whatever you might need.
After an early breakfast with our guests, we head towards Forsyth Park and watch a bit of the staging for the parade. The atmosphere is electric with ample good cheer to spare. While we start as a group, we end up separating into smaller parts as the day continues. I usually return home first to begin preparations for our Irish dinner. As the afternoon stretches into the evening, people swing back by the house for additional rest and sustenance, and I hear the stories of the days shenanigans. The neighborhood parties begin to ramp up between 5 and 6, and the youth amongst us pick their direction for the evening celebrations.
This year the cooler weather and mid-week calendar day reduced the crowds, but the timing for Spring this year was perfection! The trees were showing their Spring green and the azaleas were in full bloom. It was another absolutely perfect St. Paddy’s Day celebration!
